St. Cloud State Soccer announces 2016 schedule
6/9/2016 2:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The St. Cloud State University soccer team will open its 2016 regular season with a road match at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. on Sept. 2. SCSU's soccer schedule, which was announced on June 9, will include a full slate of games in the highly competitive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference along with three tough non-conference matches and two preseason exhibition dates in 2016.
Under the leadership of third-year head coach Gretta Arvesen, the Huskies will look to improve on last year's 9-6-3 overall record that included a solid 8-4-3 record in the NSIC.
SCSU will kick-off the year with an exhibition match at North Dakota on Aug. 16 and a home exhibition match against nearby St. Benedict's on Aug. 26 at scenic Husky Stadium. After the season opener at NMU, the Huskies will complete their U.P. swing with a match at Michigan Tech on Sept. 4 followed by a final non-conference match against Grand Valley State University on Sept. 9 in a neutral site match to be played at Mankato, Minn.
The Huskies will start their regular season home schedule and the 2016 NSIC schedule with a showdown against longtime rival Minnesota Duluth on Sept. 13 at Husky Stadium. The match is the start of a 15-match NSIC schedule that will wrap up with the NSIC tournament on Nov. 3-5.
"We are excited for the challenge of our 2016 schedule," Arvesen said. "We will be exposed to high levels of competition that will require our team to unite, grow and evolve our problem-solving abilities. We have a dynamic group of incoming and returning players, who are committed to improvement and putting in the work necessary to consistently perform our best. We believe our challenging non-conference schedule will emphasize the importance of concerted team effort, aid in the development of our team culture, and prepare us for the fierce competitiveness of the NSIC regular season."
SCSU will be led in 2016 by returning All-NSIC award winners junior Mackenzie Winters and sophomore Maria Kass, who paced SCSU with eight goals and 18 points during her rookie year in 2015.
All SCSU home games are played at Husky Stadium, which is located on the campus of the University on the banks of the Mississippi River. Tickets for all home games are available at the gate on game day. SCSU students with a valid SCSU student ID card will be admitted FREE to all regular season home soccer games in 2016.
