St. Cloud, Minn. – Senior Megan Hedstrom threw a perfect game in the first game and also won the second game in relief to help lead the St. Cloud State softball team (20-12, 4-2 NSIC) to a sweep of the University of Mary (7-24, 1-5 NSIC) on Sunday, April 2, at the Husky Dome by scores of 1-0 and 6-4. The program has now won its last four games
Hedstrom (9-5) was the story of the first game in throwing a seven-inning perfect game with four strikeouts. She only allowed one ball to be hit out of the infield in a dominant effort in recording 16 ground outs plus the four punch outs. She entered in the second game and picked up a relief win with 2.1 innings thrown and a strike out. Sophomore Kate Kopeck was the game two starter for SCSU and she allowed two runs in 4.2 innings throw with three strikeouts.
Senior Abby Bunnell, who's Senior Day was being celebrated on Sunday, had five hits, three runs scored and three RBIs in the two contests. Senior Jessica Goerger tallied three hits and three RBIs. Freshman Maya Keating had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Senior Alyssa Coletto totaled a hit and two walks. Sophomore Morgan Emmans tallied two hits including a double.
Game One
SCSU scored the only run of the game in the first inning of the day's opener. Bunnell had a lead-off single, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Goerger's double. That would be all the support that Hedstrom would need in earning the victory.
The tough luck loser in the first game was Brieann Backes (4-9), who allowed just the one first inning run and eight hits in her seven innings worked.
Game Two
The Huskies again scored first in the second game as the team broke through for four runs in the second inning. Senior Rebecca Harps, sophomore Jaiden Lund and freshman Anna Roth all walked to load the bases. Bunnell cleared the bases with her triple to the gap. Bunnell then raced home from third with the team's fourth run of the frame as Keating reached on an infield single.
U-Mary broke through and tied the game up in the fifth inning with a four spot. Rebekkah Keller and Taylor Mendez each drove in a run with Colleen Crutchfield knocking in a pair.
SCSU took the lead back with pair of tallies in the bottom of the frame. Bunnell started the inning with a bunt single and moved to second on Keating's infield single. The ball was thrown away on the play to allow both runners to move up a base off the errant throw. Goerger then singled to the gap to score Bunnell and Keating and give the Huskies a 6-4 advantage that they would not surrender.
The loss in the second game went to Taylor Lara (3-10), who surrendered six runs in 4.1 innings worked with three strikeouts.
The Huskies continue NSIC play and travels to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on Northern State for a pair of games on Tuesday, April 4. The program takes on the Wolves at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
