CoSIDA Release
GREENWOOD, IND. – The postseason awards continue to roll in for the St. Cloud State University softball team, this time on the academic side of the field. Earlier this week, senior pitcher Kate Kopeck (Lumsden, Sask. / Lumsden) earned First Team Academic All-District honors from the College of Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
Kopeck is the first Husky to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors since 2011 and was one of two pitchers from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) to earn the prestigious honor. During an impressive final season with St. Cloud State, Kopeck maintained an even more impressive 3.96 grade point average (GPA) while majoring in biomedical studies and molecular biology.
On the field, Kopeck had a phenomenal senior season, as she earned Second Team All-NSIC honors after serving as St. Cloud State's ace for the majority of the 2019 season. At the end of the regular season, Kopeck led the team in overall innings pitched, strikeouts and wins and held the second lowest ERA on the Huskies pitching staff. More impressively, Kopeck ranked tenth in the nation entering the NSIC and NCAA Tournament in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.25), while her 17 regular season wins and 2.17 ERA ranked both ranked top-10 in the NSIC.
After St. Cloud State's two playoff runs, Kopeck concluded the season with a 2.64 ERA and an 18-7 record on the mound for the Huskies. She tallied a career-high 161 strikeouts and walked just 26 while holding opposing batters to a .244 batting average during the year.
Kopeck was one of seven players to receive the prestigious honor from the NSIC, as she and Winona State's Jordyn Kleman were the two pitchers to earn First Team All-District honors on Thursday. Honorees are nominated by their institutions sport information directors/athletic communications representatives and are selected by the members of CoSIDA. Kopeck and her fellow Academic All-District selections advance to the Academic All-America ballot, and Academic All-Americans will be announced in June.
