ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University soccer team battled in its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) road game of 2019. In a game featuring two undefeated team in NSIC play, St. Cloud State battled with Concordia-St. Paul for a full 90 minutes but was unable to leave victories, as a late goal lifted the Golden Bears to a 1-0 win over the Huskies.
St. Cloud State's defense was the star Friday afternoon, as the team held Concordia-St. Paul to just seven shots on goal during regulation, while sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Welsh (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) made six saves on the pitch for the Huskies. The offense, though, had plenty of opportunities to take an early lead. In fact, in the first minute, Hannah Marion (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / South St. Paul) had a chance to give St. Cloud State an early lead, but her shot sailed wide of the goal.
The two teams would both put together scoring chances in the first half, as they both compiled six shots in the opening 45 minutes. It wasn't until the second when Concordia-St. Paul's single shot would find the back of the net. With under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Nikki Anderson beat Welsh to put the Golden Bears ahead 1-0.
The Huskies, though, were not out for the count, as they tallied three more shots in the final three minutes of regulation. Marion just missed a goal to the left while fellow seniors Mia Giorgi (Eagan, Minn. / Eastview) and Brooke Bares (Fredonia, Wis. / Northern Ozaukee) each tallied a shot in the waning seconds of regulation.
Marion and Giorgi each tallied two shots in the match, while Claire Shea (Excelsior, Minn. / Chanhassen), Giorgi, Monica Majeski (New Franken, Wis. / Notre Dame), Jenna Dominguez (Geneva, Ill. / Geneva Community) and Carly Ekstrom (Cedar Falls, Iowa / Cedar Falls) accounted for the Huskies shots on goal.
Welsh had another outstanding outing in goal for St. Cloud State, as she played all 90 minutes and made six saves for the Huskies.
With the loss, St. Cloud State's overall record is now 2-2-2 and the team holds a 1-1-1 record in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Sunday, September 29 when they face #2 Minnesota State at 1 p.m. in Mankato, Minnesota.
