Home runs lead to softball sweep on final day in Florida

WINTERHAVEN, FLORIDA – The St. Cloud State University softball team found the perfect way to end its annual spring break trip to Florida. The Huskies had another outstanding day at the Spring Games in Winterhaven, Florida, as they extended their win streak to three games with wins over Le Moyne College and Bentley University Thursday afternoon.
St. Cloud State opened the day with an impressive 3-0 win over Le Moyne, as the team used timely hitting and yet another complete game shutout by Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bayport) to defeat the Dolphins Thursday morning. After two scoreless innings, the Huskies managed to get their first run of the ball game thanks to a solo home run by Sydney Trees (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake). The single run lead would hold until the seventh, when yet another home run, this time a two-run homer provided by Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) would extend St. Cloud State's lead to 3-0.
The 1-0 lead would have been enough for LaPoint, as she was once again stellar from inside the circle for the Huskies. For the third consecutive game, the sophomore ace went the distance, throwing the complete game shutout to improve her record to 7-0. In those seven innings, LaPoint surrendered just two hits and walked just one batter while striking out six, ending her spring break with some pretty impressive numbers. In four games this week alone, LaPoint surrendered just one earned run in 24 minutes of work, walking one batter while striking out 19.
St. Cloud State's most exciting game of the break came in game two, as the team rallied for a big 3-2 victory over Bentley University. Again, it was the home run ball that fueled the Huskies comeback victory, but it was also the home run that put St. Cloud State in an early deficit. Unlike in the previous two victories, it was the visiting Falcons that took the early lead, as Bentley hit a two-run home run off Kylie Thomsen (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove Village) to take a 2-0 lead over the Huskies in the second inning.
As the home team, St. Cloud State had plenty of time to even the score and take the lead, and the Huskies did just that in the bottom of the third. After a scoreless second, St. Cloud State evened things up at 2-2 thanks to Trees second home run of the day. Senior Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario / Emily Carr Secondary) recorded a leadoff single to open the inning but was able to trot her way to home plate, as Trees hit the homer on the very next pitch to even things up 2-2.
Both teams would threaten to score in the ensuing innings, but the score stayed knotted until the threat of extra innings seemed eminent. It all started with a Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) single and stolen base, giving the Huskies a speedy runner in scoring position with one out on the board. Maya Keating (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton-Warrensville) grounded out to the third baseman, allowing Bowlin to advance to third, leaving it up to Estrada to hit in the go-ahead run. The power lefty sophomore did just that, as her single through the left side allowed Bowlin to score with ease, giving St. Cloud State that last second 3-2 advantage.
The Falcons threatened in the top of the seventh, as they put together a small rally with three singles to load the bases with two outs. The situation wasn't too big for relief pitcher Lauren Kirchberg (Columbus, Wis. / Columbus), as she pitched her way out of the jam with a flyout to Bowlin, securing the 3-2 win for the Huskies.
Bowlin had an outstanding day at the plate for St. Cloud State, as she went 2-4 with one run in game one and 1-2 with a run in game two to finish the day 3-6 at the plate, scoring two of the Huskies six runs on the day.
Kirchberg earned the win in game two, as she improved her record to 3-2 on the season thanks to four innings of flawless work. The sophomore surrendered four hits and one walk while striking out two in four innings of relief.
With the wins, St. Cloud State closes the trip with a 15-7 record. The Huskies will resume play on March 20, 2020 when they participate in the Missouri Western Hy-Vee Classic.
