AUBURNDALE, FLA. – It took 24 hours, but the St. Cloud State University softball team seems to have adjusted to the Florida sunshine and warm weather. After dropping two games on their first day in Florida, the Huskies rebounded with two key nonconference wins Saturday afternoon, taking down Rockhurst University 6-5 before earning a key 2-0 win over Ferris State University in the night cap.
St. Cloud State used early scoring to win both its games Saturday afternoon, as the Huskies scored a combined eight runs in the first three innings of both games to earn their two wins. In the opener against Rockhurst, St. Cloud State scored three runs in the first inning, courtesy of RBIs from Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia), Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) and Haley McFarlane (Swisher, Iowa / Cedar Rapids Prairie).
With a 3-1 lead after one, the Huskies tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third, again thanks to McFarlane. After Estrada reached on an error and Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) drew a two-out walk, McFarlane blasted a ball over the outfield fence, notching her third home run of the season and extending St. Cloud State's lead to 6-1.
The six runs proved to be enough for ace Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bayport), who went the distance to earn her third win of the 2020 season. The sophomore surrendered just three earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work with two total strikeouts.
Weinberger was the top hitter for the Huskies against Rockhurst, as she went 2-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI in the victory. Estrada, McFarlane, Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario / Emily Carr Secondary) and Kaitlyn Istvanovich (Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) accounted for St. Cloud State's other hits in the game.
The Huskies offense and defense came together in the second game of the afternoon, as they earned a clutch 2-0 win over Ferris State to improve to 9-5 on the season. St. Cloud State wasted no time scoring the first runs of the ball game, as Estrada and Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) took advantage of a Bulldog error to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead in the game.
It seemed like St. Cloud State would score more runs multiple times in the next six innings, but the Huskies were never able to cross the plate. Ferris State couldn't pull off the feat either, as Kylie Thomsen (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove Village) was gold in the circle for St. Cloud State. The junior threw the complete game shutout, surrendering just five hits and two runs in seven total innings of work while striking out seven.
With the wins, the Huskies overall record improves to 9-5. St. Cloud State will return to action on Sunday, March 8 as the team takes on Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Northwood University in Auburndale, Florida.
