WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – The St. Cloud State University softball team continues its trek through the great state of Florida, this time with two doubleheaders on a fine Sunday morning and afternoon. After earning two wins Saturday, the Huskies were looking to keep the good times rolling in their games against Indiana University at Pennsylvania and Northwood University. St. Cloud State opened the day with a 7-6 win over IUP before dropping game two to Northwood by a final score of 5-4.
The Huskies offense powered their way to victory in the first game of the day, as clutch hitting late in the game resulted in the 7-6 win. Like in previous games, St. Cloud State found itself in an early deficit, as the Crimson Hawks took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the top of the second. In the long run, it didn't hurt the Huskies, as they responded with a four run inning of their own to go up 4-1. Juniors Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) and Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family Academy) opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Haley McFarlane (Swisher, Iowa / Cedar Rapids Prairie) launched her second home run in as many days to put St. Cloud State ahead 3-1.
Two batters later, Sydney Trees (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake) hit her second solo shot of the season, boosting the Huskies lead to 4-1 after the second inning. IUP would cut the lead to 4-2 in the very next inning before tying things up at 4-4 in the top of the fourth.
Trees again gave St. Cloud State a lead in the bottom of the fourth, as she hit her second home run of the ball game to give the Huskies a 5-4 advantage headed into the top of the fifth. It was then that the Crimson Hawks would take their first lead since the second inning, as a double followed by a home run with give IUP a 6-5 advantage with nine outs remaining in the ball game.
The Crimson Hawks held St. Cloud State scoreless in the fifth, leaving the Huskies just six outs to tie the game or retake a lead. St. Cloud State certainly made those six outs count, as the team scrapped its way to a two-run inning in the bottom of the sixth. Bowlin opened the inning with a leadoff single and was eventually bunted over to second by Sophie Culhane (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) to put a runner in scoring position with just one out on the board. A clutch single by Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario / Emily Carr Secondary) would score Bowlin, tying the game at 6-6 with at least one inning left to play.
The Huskies weren't done scoring in the bottom of the sixth, as Francesconi eventually scored on a wild play to give St. Cloud State a 7-6 lead. That one run lead was enough for Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bayport), who secured her fourth win of the season after coming in relief in the top of the fifth. The sophomore sent IUP's batters down in order in the top of the seventh, securing the 7-6 win with a groundout to the third baseman.
Bowlin and Trees both had strong games at the plate for the Huskies, as Bowlin went 3-3 and scored two runs, while Trees was 2-3 with two home runs and two RBI for St. Cloud State.
Game two did not go as well for the Huskies, as they fell to Northwood by a final score of 5-4. After the Wolves took an early 1-0 lead in the first, St. Cloud State was forced to play catch up, something the team was never quite able to do. The Huskies did battle though, as they scored two runs in the fifth to cut Northwood's lead to 3-2 thanks to RBIs from Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia) and Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield).
Two home runs in the bottom of the fifth allowed the Wolves to extend their lead to 5-2, and St. Cloud State would never recover. Still, there was hope for the Huskies, as they rallied to score two runs in the top of the sixth. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late, as St. Cloud State fell to Northwood by a final score of 5-4.
With the split, the Huskies overall record now stands at 10-6. St. Cloud State will take a much deserved Monday off before returning to action on Tuesday, March 9 for two games against Lake Erie College and Hillsdale College.
