WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – There are days were things just click, when absolutely everything seems to go right and nothing truly goes wrong.
It was one of those days for St. Cloud State University pitchers Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bayport) and Kylie Thomsen (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove Village). The two aces surrendered just one run to their opponents in a combined 14 innings of work, guiding the Huskies to yet another sweep on their annual Florida excursion. In fact, the pitchers were so good, St. Cloud State left the field with a 12-6 record thanks to a 4-0 win over Lake Erie and a 6-1 takedown of Hillsdale College Tuesday afternoon.
LaPoint was a force to be reckoned with in the Huskies 4-0 win over Lake Erie, as she surrendered just three hits and did not walk a single batter in the complete game shutout. In fact, the sophomore ace never faced more than three batters in a single inning, as she managed to pitch her way through one leadoff and two one out singles with groundouts and double plays. Maybe more impressively, LaPoint didn't allow a single Storm batter to reach second base, cementing her best start and fifth win of the season with three strikeouts.
Of course, LaPoint received plenty of support from her offense in game one, as St. Cloud State scored one run in the third and three in the fourth to help the sophomore out. In fact, the Huskies struck first in the top of the third, as Sydney LaPoint (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake) led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on a two-out error by Lake Erie's catcher, giving St. Cloud State the early 1-0 lead. While that would have been enough with LaPoint in the circle, the Huskies tacked on three insurance runs in the fourth thanks to a three-run homer by junior third baseman Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South), extending their lead to 4-0.
As aforementioned, that 4-0 lead held, as a 6-4-3 double play ended any hopes of a rally for the Storm and cemented St. Cloud State's 11th win of the 2020 season. The Huskies would soon earn with No. 12 on the year, as Thomsen followed up LaPoint's golden pitching performance with one of her own, guiding St. Cloud State to a 6-1 victory over Hillsdale. Like in game one, the Huskies didn't break through on the scoreboard until the third inning, but they were the first team to score, as they took the early 2-0 lead on a two-run double by Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield). Two innings later, Estrada again extended St. Cloud State's lead, as her three-run home run gave the Huskies a 5-0 cushion with two innings remaining in the ball game.
Hillsdale eventually managed to score a run, cutting St. Cloud State's lead to 5-1 with two singles in the top of the sixth. It was no harm no foul, as Estrada once again delivered in the bottom of the inning, this time with a sacrifice fly. The sophomore's flyout to left field allowed the speedy Maya Keating (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton-Warrensville) to score from third with ease and regained a five-run advantage for the Huskies.
The lead was enough for Thomsen, as she went the distance to secure the 6-1 victory for St. Cloud State. The junior struck out five and walked two in seven innings of work, giving up just the single run in the top of the sixth.
Estrada ended game two as the Huskies top hitter, as she went 2-3 at the plate with two runs and a career-high six RBI in the victory. Conrads was the top hitter against Lake Erie, as she went 2-3 with one run and three RBI for St. Cloud State.
With the wins, the Huskies overall record improves to 12-6 as they earn their second sweep of the Florida trip. St. Cloud State continues with two more games Wednesday, as the team takes on California-Pennsylvania and Lewis at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. in Auburndale, Florida.
