Softball downs Lewis in Wednesday split

WINTERHAVEN, FLORIDA – The rest of the sports world may be in chaos and shambles, but the St. Cloud State University softball team provided a bright spot in a dreary day in the history of sports. While the NCAA was making announcements regarding national championships, the Huskies were winning ballgames, as they earned yet another split in Florida to improve to 13-7 on the season.
St. Cloud State's earned its split Wednesday morning, as the team opened the day with a 2-0 loss to California-Pennsylvania before rebounding with a big 5-1 win over Lewis University. The 2-0 loss was highlighted once again by another pitcher's duel, as the Huskies Lauren Kirchberg (Columbus, Wis. / Columbus) and the Vulcans Ellie Lobdell were dealing in the circle. In fact, the two pitchers allowed just 11 combined hits in seven innings of work while tallying 14 combined strikeouts and not allowing a single batter to reach base on a walk.
California-Pennsylvania struggled to see Kirchberg's pitches in the first half of the game, as the Vulcans saw just five batters record hits in the first four innings, while not a single base runner advanced beyond second base. St. Cloud State was equally unsuccessful against Lobdell, as the Vulcan starter was throwing a one-hit ball game through the opening four innings. Sadly, it was California-Pennsylvania that managed to strike first, as a two-run home run by Brooke Wilson in the top of the fifth gave the Vulcans a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies tried valiantly to tie things up in the final innings, as they put runners on base in the both the fifth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) and Haley McFarlane (Swisher, Iowa / Cedar Rapids Prairie) recorded back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third with one out. The Huskies were unfortunately unable to score, as Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia) and Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario / Emily Carr Secondary) both lost their battles with Lobdell to end the inning.
Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth, and Kirchberg kept the Vulcans off the board in the top of the seventh, giving her team the chance to win the game in the bottom of the inning. It looked like St. Cloud State had a legitimate chance to do just that, as three-hole hitter Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) led off the inning with a monster double, giving the Huskies a runner in scoring position with zero outs. Scoring, though, wasn't meant to be for St. Cloud State, as the next three batters went down in order to lose the game 2-0.
The Huskies rebounded in the best way possible, as they scored five runs to take down Lewis by a final score of 5-1. As per usual (when not partaking in a pitchers duel), St. Cloud State put together a big first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Bowlin reached base thanks to an error by the shortstop and eventually stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs for the Huskies. She would eventually score thanks to an RBI by Estrada to make it 1-0 before Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) made it 2-0 by scoring on a Sydney Trees (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake) double.
St. Cloud State added three more runs in the top of the third, extending its lead to 5-0 with four innings remaining in the ballgame. Senior second baseman Maya Keating (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton-Warrensville) scored on a RBI double from Conrads to boost the Huskies lead to 3-0. It was McFarlane who provided the offensive highlight of the inning. The junior hit her third home run of the trip, this time with Conrads on base, to extend St. Cloud State's lead to 5-0.
The 5-0 lead was enough for sophomore ace Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bayport), who went the distance for the second consecutive day to nab her sixth win of the season. In seven complete innings of work, LaPoint surrendered just one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and did not walk a single batter. The lone run she gave up was in the bottom of the fourth, when a simple groundout resulted in the Flyers cutting the lead to 5-1. That was the lone run Lewis would score, though, as the Huskies secured the 5-1 victory on a fielder's choice ground out.
Conrads was the top hitter for St. Cloud State against Lewis, while Bowlin was the lone hitter to compile multiple hits in the loss to California-Pennsylvania. Conrads went 2-3 against the Flyers with two runs and one RBI, while Bowlin was 2-3 against the Vulcans.
With the split, the Huskies overall record improves to 13-7. St. Cloud State will return to action on Thursday, March 12 when the team takes on La Moyne College and Bently University in Winterhaven, Florida.
