SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The St. Cloud State University tennis team made one point very clear in its weekend matches in South Dakota: the team is not going down without a fight. The Huskies battled in their second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) duel of the weekend but ultimately fell to the University of Sioux Falls by a final score of 4-3.
St. Cloud State pushed Sioux Falls to the brink both in singles and doubles play, forcing the Cougars to fight for every point of every game in every set. A single break and a tiebreaker were all that separated the Huskies from three wins in doubles play, as Sioux Falls took the point by winning all three doubles matches. It certainly wasn't without a fight, though. St. Cloud State's No. 1 team of Jill Kedrowski (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) and Shanna Kinny (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) were even with Megan Quandt and Talia Janos through eight games, but a late break by the Cougars helped them take the match by a final score of 6-4.
The most exciting match of doubles play came at the No. 2 slot, as Frances Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii / Dixie State) and Olivia Frederickson (Fridley, Minn. / Fridley) battled their way to a tiebreaker as neither team managed to break the other. The duo fell in the tiebreaker, though, as Sioux Falls won a crucial point with a 7-6 (7-3) win.
The team of Sam Fitzpatrick (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) and Kylee Frisbie (Foley, Minn. / Foley) were also formidable opponents, but fell at the No. 3 doubles slot by a score of 6-3.
The Huskies looked to make up ground in singles play, as they won three of six matches against Sioux Falls. Goldsmith earned a huge win over Quandt as the No. 1 singles player, dowing the Cougars top player by a score of 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.
Kedrowski earned another big win for St. Cloud State in singles play, as she downed Sioux Falls No. 4 player Danielle Thorfinnson 6-2, 6-2, while Frederickson earned the Huskies final win of the day at the No. 6 slot. The junior defeated Rachel Klatt 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
Fitzpatrick, Kinny and Frisbie rounded out the Huskies line up in singles play, playing at the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots respectively. Kinny nearly pulled off a duel-winning victory for St. Cloud State as the No. 3 singles player. After dropping the first set 7-6 (7-2), the sophomore rebounded with a late break to force a decisive third set with a 6-4 win in the second. Sadly, a late break by her opponent resulted in a Sioux Falls win, as Kinny fell 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 7-5.
Fitzpatrick lost her match as the No. 2 singles player 6-2, 6-0, while Frisbie fell at the No. 5 slot 6-1, 6-1.
With the loss, the Huskies record now stands at 1-3 with an identical 1-3 mark in NSIC play. St. Cloud State will return to action on Saturday, February 27 when the team takes on the University of Mary in Duluth, Minnesota.
