DULUTH, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University tennis once again faced a tough opponent in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. Though the Huskies put up a fight in their battle with the University of Mary, they were unable to come away victorious, as the team fell to the Marauders 6-1 in Duluth, Minnesota.
Jill Kedrowski (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) earned St. Cloud State's lone point of the night, as she took down Mary's Jamie Stoppler in singles play in straight sets 7-6, 6-1. The senior's smart game planned not only earned her the lone victory of the night for St. Cloud state, but also counted as the 99th of her career, pulling her within one of the prestigious 100 dual match wins club.
Kylee Frisbie (Foley, Minn. / Foley) also fought valiantly as the Huskies No. 5 singles player, forcing a decisive third set against the Marauders Kali Askvig. After dropping the first set 7-5, Frisbie rallied for a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker win to force the third and final set. The first year, though, fell to Askvig 10-4, dropping the match 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (4-10).
The other four student-athletes all battled in their singles matches, losing by just one break in at least one of the two sets played. Sam Fitzpatrick (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) battled as St. Cloud State's No. 1 singles player, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-2 to Tasha Dembo. Shanna Kinny (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) also put up a front in her match at No. 2, losing on a late break in set on 6-4 before falling in set two 6-2.
Olivia Frederickson (Fridley, Minn. / Fridley) and Emma Brunkow (Lake City, Minn. / Lake City) rounded out the Huskies line up in singles play, falling in straight sets by identical scores of 6-3, 6-1.
St. Cloud State opened Saturday with three losses in doubles play despite hard fought efforts by all three teams. An early break by Mary was the only thing that stood in the way of Frisbie and Brunkow's victory as the No. 3 team, while Fitzpatrick and Frederickson fell as the No. 2 team by a score of 6-1. The Huskies No. 1 team of Kedrowski and Kinny fell 6-0 at the hands of Dembo and Yursa Hegy.
With the loss, St. Cloud State's record now stands at 1-4, and the team is 1-4 in NSIC play. The Huskies will return to action on Sunday, February 28 when they host Minnesota State-Moorhead at 1 p.m. in Duluth, Minnesota.
