DULUTH, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University tennis team was on a hot streak throughout the month of March. The Huskies entered their Sunday match against Bemidji State University riding a three-match win streak, having defeated Minnesota-Crookston Saturday night. Sadly, St. Cloud State saw its win streak snapped Sunday morning, as the Huskies fell to the Beavers by a final score of 6-1.
Despite the final score, the match itself was incredibly even, as all players could have easily won their respective individual matches. Bemidji State held a slight 1-0 lead after doubles play, as the Beavers won two of the three matches. St. Cloud State's lone win in doubles play came from the No. 2 team, as Jill Kedrowski (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) and Kylee Frisbee (Foley, Minn. / Foley) beat Claudie Billand and Isabela Nelson by a score of 6-2. The Huskies No. 1 and 3 teams of Shanna Kinny (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) and Francis Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii / Dixie State) and Samantha Fitzpatrick (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) and Emma Brunkow (Lake City, Minn. / Lake City) fell by identical scores of 6-3 after an early break proved costly.
St. Cloud State looked to right the ship in singles play, but saw only one individual win their respective match. As the No. 4 singles player, Kinny defeated Hannah Peterson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to win the Huskies lone point of the day.
Kedrowski nearly rallied to earn St. Cloud State's second point as the team's No. 3 singles player. After falling behind one set to none, the senior rallied to win set two by a score of 6-4, forcing the decisive third set. Kedrowski came up short in the definitive tiebreaker, dropping the match by a final score of 5-7, 6-4, 1-10.
Goldsmith, Fitzpatrick and Brunkow battled in their respective singles matches, but came up short as all three fell in straight sets. As the No. 1 singles player, Goldsmith fell by scores of 6-2, 6-2, while Fitzpatrick fell 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles slot. After losing the first set 6-0, Brunkow nearly rallied to force the third set, but a late break caused her to fall 6-0, 6-4.
As the No. 5 singles player, Frisbie lost by default.
With the loss, the Huskies overall record now stands at 4-7, and the team is 2-6 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. St. Cloud State will return to action on April 9 when the team hosts Upper Iowa at 5 p.m. in Sartell, Minnesota.
