ST. CLOUD, MINN. - After over a year, the St. Cloud State University softball team is returning to Selke Field. The Huskies will host Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foes Augustana University and Wayne State College in their first outdoor home doubleheaders since April 28, 2019. St. Cloud State will open the weekend against No. 2 Augustana at 12 and 2 p.m. on Friday, April 2 before facing Wayne State at the same time on Saturday.Â
The Huskies officially opened the NSIC season against Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday. St. Cloud State rallied to force extra innings in game one, but a three-run eighth inning for the Bulldogs resulted in a 6-3 loss for the Huskies. Minnesota-Duluth blasted two home runs to hand St. Cloud State a 6-3 loss in game two as well.Â
At this time, a limited number of fans will be able to attend the Huskies softball games at Selke Field based on guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Health. For those fans who cannot attend, both doubleheaders will be available on the NSIC Network and live stats will also be available on scsuhuskies.com. Finally, score updates will be made when possible on the team's official Twitter account (@SCSUHUSKIES_SB).Â
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's NSIC doubleheaders:
2 - St. Cloud State will officially face its first ranked opponent of the 2021 season. The Vikings were most recently ranked No. 2 in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll and have been ranked every week of the 2021 season. Augustana has dropped just two games in all of 2021 and are currently riding an 11 game win streak. Additionally, the Vikings have won their last six games by three runs or more and have not surrendered a run in 12 innings.Â
.500 - The Huskies pitching staff will have to stop Kendall Cornick, who is one of the top hitters in the NSIC this season. Cornick has started all 14 games for Augustana this season and posted a .500 batting average with 25 hits in 50 at bats. The outfielder currently ranks second in the NSIC in batting average, runs (22), hits (25) and slugging (.900) and leads the conference this year in total bases 45.Â
.271 / 4.65 - The Vikings aren't the only opponent St. Cloud State will face this weekend. The Huskies will also host Wayne State at 12 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 3. The Wildcats have struggled to open the 2021 season, posting a 3-11 record while hitting .271 as a team. Wayne State's pitching staff has posted a team earned run average (ERA) of 4.65 this season, surrendering 112 hits and 81 runs in 87.1 innings of work.Â
40 - The Huskies like scoring in the second inning of games in 2021. St. Cloud State has scored 40 runs in the second inning alone through 16 games this season, averaging 2.5 runs a game in that inning alone. In fact, the Huskies have scored 110 of their 119 runs this season in innings one through five and have scored just nine runs after the fifth innings this season.Â
7 - St. Cloud's State offense has been prolific to start the 2021 season. As a team, the Huskies are hitting .381 and lead the NSIC in team batting average. However, the team is at its best when the players aren't hitting home runs. St. Cloud State is 7-1 in games when batters don't hit a ball over the fence and 1-4 when two or more batters hit home runs in a game.Â
