ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University softball team will open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season at home. Due to cold temperatures in Duluth, Minnesota, the Huskies and Minnesota-Duluth agreed to a site reversal, allowing Tuesday's conference opener to be played in the Husky Dome.
First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minnesota with game two to follow. Due to NSIC policy, St. Cloud State will serve as the visiting team, and the Bulldogs will remain the home team. Live stats and video will be available through www.scsuhuskies.com and score updates will continue to be made on the team's Twitter page (@SCSUHUSKIES_SB).
Here are the five things to know before Tuesday's site reversal:
4 - The Huskies are riding a season-long four game win streak after an outstanding weekend at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Classic. St. Cloud State earned the weekend sweep of Central Missouri and Northeastern State, defeating the Jennies 5-4 and 4-3 in extra innings and RiverHawks by scores of 10-0 and 4-3. It marks the first perfect weekend for the Huskies this season, who are now 12-9 on the season.
3-9 - St. Cloud State has opened NSIC play against Minnesota-Duluth every season since 2016, though the Huskies don't have the greatest record against their conference rivals. St. Cloud State is 3-9 in those 12 conference doubleheaders and have lost four straight at the hands of the Bulldogs. In fact, the Huskies last win over Minnesota-Duluth occurred on March 27, 2018, when they earned a 2-0 victory to open NSIC play. Currently fifth year senior Kylie Thomsen (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove Village) was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete game one-hitter in the win.
19 - St. Cloud State's offense doesn't really have an "off" inning, as the team averages 10+ runs in the first six innings of the game. The Huskies bats, though, really come to life in the fourth and fifth innings. St. Cloud State has scored 19 runs in both innings this season and are 7-0 when leading after the fifth. Additionally, the Huskies are 11-4 when they out-hit their opponents but 1-5 when they are out-hit.
3-1 - Tuesday will serve as a homecoming of sorts for St. Cloud State. The Huskies haven't played at home since February 13, the final day of the Kelly Laas Tournament. St. Cloud State posted a 3-1 record at its home tournament with nonconference wins over Bemidji State, Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State.
20 - The Huskies were nearly unbeatable at home in 2021. Whether they were in the dome or at Selke Field, the team posted a 20-6 record in home games last season with marquee wins over Augustana, Wayne Stat, Upper Iowa and Northern State. In fact, St. Cloud State was only swept by two teams in home games last season: Minnesota-Duluth and Winona State.
