St. Cloud State falls 6-5 in the final inning
CLERMONT, FLA.. – Sunday was not a day of rest for the St. Cloud State University softball team. The Huskies faced off with Mercyhurst Sunday afternoon in a single game, looking for their first win in the sunny state of Florida. Despite a furious comeback, St. Cloud State fell to the Lakers by a final score of 6-5. The Huskies are now 6-7 on the year.
GAME ONE: St. Cloud State (5) vs. Mercyhurst (6)
St. Cloud State had its work cut out for it after the top of the first inning, as Mercyhurst took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on two singles, a sac fly and a walk. The Huskies answered by scoring their first run in the bottom of the second, as Sophie Culhane (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) reached on a Laker error and later scored to cut the lead to 3-1.
In turn, Mercyhurst scored two in the top of the third and another in the fourth, extending the lead to 6-1 midway through the game. St. Cloud State was certainly not down and out for the count, as the Huskies continued to put runners on base in the bottom of both innings. Eventually, the perseverance paid off, as St. Cloud State broke through in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the lead to 6-2 thanks to smart base running by Culhane. It was the sixth, though, when the Huskies bats finally came to life. With one out in the inning, Alexandra Pinkowski (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake) poked a single to the outfield and later scored on a two-run homer by Raven Vanden Langenberg (Seymour, Wis. / Seymour). Sydney Trees (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake) made it a one-run ball game, as she scored on an RBI double from Haley McFarlane (Swisher, Iowa / Cedar Rapids Prairie), making it 6-5 entering the final inning. Trees run was the final the Huskies would score in the game, though, as they fell by that score of 6-5.
