Krueger, Trees homer in the Huskies win
CLERMONT, FLA.. – The St. Cloud State University softball team is back in the win column. The Huskies earned their first win down at The Springs Games in Clermont, Florida, overcoming the pouring rain to down. California-Pennsylvania 6-2. With the win, St. Cloud State gets back to .500, as the team's record stands at 7-7.
St. Cloud State (6) vs. California-Pennsylvania (2)
The Huskies overcame several obstacles en route to their first game of their spring break trip, including situational hitting. After four scoreless innings, St. Cloud State finally broke through in the top of the fifth thanks, in large part, to a one-out single by Madison Spah (Anoka, Minn. / Anoka). The speedy lefty singled up the middle, putting a runner on first and no outs for the Huskies. Spah didn't even need to use her speed to score the first run of the ball game, as Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis. / Appleton North) blasted a home run over the right center fence to make to 2-0 St. Cloud State after five.
St. Cloud State added two more runs in the top of the sixth, as Madie Pich (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) scored on a RBI single by Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill. / Richards) before a double by Spah made it 4-0 Huskies after six. The team then added more insurance in the top of the seventh, as Sydney Trees (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake) hit her sixth home run of the season with Raven Vanden Langenberg (Seymour, Wis. / Seymour) on second to extend St. Cloud State's lead to 6-0.
The Vulcans answered by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the Huskies lead to 6-2 in a rain delayed inning. However, Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn. / Becker) was unfazed by California-Pennsylvania's scoring efforts, as she got the Vulcan's five hitter to fly out to right field to end the game.
