The two-time Olympic Medalist among nine legendary wrestlers to enter the Hall
BELGRADE, Serbia – Longtime St. Cloud State Wrestling supporter John A. Peterson was inducted into the United World Wrestling (UWW) Hall of Fame on Friday. A legendary Freestyle wrestler, Peterson earned Gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and Silver at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He also earned a silver and a bronze at the World Championships while adding three World Cup Golds.
In his time with St. Cloud State, Peterson served as a volunteer assistant coach focusing on student-athletes' personal development. His first season with the program was the 2009-10 campaign.
"John is very deserving of this honor and is one of the greatest American wrestlers in the history of our sport," commented SCSU head coach Steve Costanzo, "More importantly, he is a class act and a man of the Lord. Our guys look to him for guidance and he has dedicated his life to making our people the best they can be. I am very happy for John and his family – this is a great honor for them!"
John and his brother Ben both entered the UWW Hall of Fame as part of the nine-member Class of 2022. The two founded Camp of Champs in 1977, a Wisconsin-based camp combining intense training and competition with recreation and character training.
