
St. Cloud State Tennis completes comeback with 4-3 win over Winona State

Huskies win third straight match, jump to three matches over .500
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Women's Tennis (7-4, 3-3 NSIC) defeated Winona State (7-5, 4-2 NSIC) 4-3 Friday evening. The Huskies dropped the doubles point, falling in all three matches, but won four of the six singles matches. This was the first match that the Huskies have won this season where they did not capture the doubles point. The Huskies were 0-3 coming into this match where they did not win the doubles point.

St. Cloud State lost the doubles point, falling in all three matches. In the No. 1 spot, sophomore Maria Paz Aoki (Marcos Paz, Argentina) and sophomore Claudia Muñoz Perez (Tarragona, Spain) suffered a 2-6 defeat to Beth Murman and Sara Anderson. Sophomore Johana Brower (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and freshman Oriana Grott (Warsaw, Poland) lost 6-7 in the No. 2 spot to Rachel Kelly and Ally Burger. In the No. 3 spot, senior Olivia Fredrickson (Fridley, Minn.)Â and sophomore Maria Molitor (Delano, Minn.) also fell 6-7 to Miranda Daulong and Maddie Moe.

In Singles play, the Huskies turned it around as they won four of the six matches. Muñoz Perez put the first point on the board for the Huskies with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot. The win also marked the third straight victory for Muñoz Perez. Senior Arisa Kashima (Saitama, Japan) defeated Maddie Moe 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot for her 3rd consecutive victory. Brower cannot be stopped as she captured her 9th straight victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 5 spot. Going into the final match between Maria Molitor and Ally Burger, the match was tied 3-3. Molitor won the first set 6-0, but then dropped the second set 5-7. In the third and final set with the match on the line, Molitor dominated the set as she won 6-2 and put the winning point on the board for the Huskies. The win marked the third straight victory for the Huskies as well as for Molitor in singles play.

St. Cloud State will return to the Sta-Fit Tennis Center on Sunday March 26th to play Upper Iowa (0-5, 0-5 NSIC). The Huskies will be looking for their 4th consecutive conference win and will look to continue their winning ways after starting the year 1-3.
