Huskies prepare for second meet of a busy competition week
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Track & Field is back in action this weekend with the Ron Masanz Classic held by Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Saturday, April 29. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. CT with the running events set to start at 2:00 p.m. CT.
LAST TIME ON THE TRACK
St. Cloud State Track & Field enjoyed a stellar performance at the Running on Hope Invitational in Minneapolis on Wednesday, earning wins in two events while nine student-athletes recorded personal bests during the day's competition. Paola Brena won the High Jump with a 1.69m clear while the 4x400 Meter Relay team of Mariana Guerra-Reese, Brooklyn Brouse, Makaylin Christenson and Katie Lavato placed first with a 4:04.72 time. Ainhoa Toquero opened SCSU's performance with a PR of 16.83s in the 100 Meter Hurdle prelims, placing 19th in a large field. Katie Lavato, Sydney Rustad and Ava Wilmanns represented the Huskies in a loaded 100 Meter preliminary field. St. Cloud State shined in the Steeplechase as Cheresa Bouley (11:18.96) and Clara Welhouse (11:36.80) just missed personal bests to take fourth and sixth while Erica Conrad enjoyed a 10-second PR to land seventh at 12:18.46. Mariana Guerra-Reese placed second in the 800 Meter with a PR of 2:17.66 as Jaileen Medina added a 2:36.11 personal best to earn a top 25 finish. Brooklyn Brouse ran a 1:03.40 in the 400 Meter Hurdles to take fifth with Makaylin Christenson running a 1:09.22 for 19th. The 4x400 Meter Relay team of Mariana Guerra-Reese, Brooklyn Brouse, Makaylin Christenson and Katie Lavato placed first with a 4:04.72 time in their first run of 2023. Greta Freed (18:56.01), Cambrie Kowal (19:18.76) and Clara Welhouse (19:20.67) closed out the running events strong in the 5000 Meter as Freed and Kowal recorded PR's while the trio finished second, fourth and fifth. In the field, Kasey Parish launched a season-best of 35.35m to take third in the Javelin while Dacoda Zimmerman placed ninth in the Shot Put at 12.25m. Paola Brena opened the jumps with a win in the High Jump – clearing 1.69m – and led a strong day by the vertical group that added Outdoor bests for both Julia Rowles at 1.64m and Ainhoa Toquero at 1.50m. Parker Buske placed fifth in the Triple Jump at 11.33m, followed by Destiny Baughman's 11.01m mark in eighth. Baughman, Toquero and Wilmanns wrapped things up in the Long Jump.
NATIONALLY RANKED HUSKIES
Three Huskies can be found across the NCAA DII rankings entering the week, led by No. 3 Paola Brena (1.73m) in the High Jump. Parker Buske (12.09m) ranks No. 23 nationally in the Triple Jump while Brooklyn Brouse (1:03.25) is No. 49 in the 400 Hurdles.
GOING THE DISTANCE
The SCSU distance group has enjoyed a strong start to 2023's Outdoor season, as Greta Freed (39:39.07) and Cambrie Kowal (40:44.28) currently rank No. 7 and No. 11 respectively in the NSIC's 10,000 Meter. Cheresa Bouley (11:53.88) and Clara Welhouse (11:54.52) are five-six in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, landing four SCSU distance runners inside their events' top-11.
PHENOMENAL PARKER
Senior jumper Parker Buske currently ranks No. 4 in the NSIC with a 12.19m mark in the Triple Jump while landing No. 12 in the Long Jump at 5.45m. Buske was an Indoor All-American in 2022 and looks to continue building off a strong start to 2023's Outdoor campaign.
PRESEASON POLLING
St. Cloud State Track & Field was picked to finish 10th in the 2023 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Huskies have placed top 10 in the NSIC Outdoor Championships in 11 of 13 conference meets during the program's Northern Sun membership, reaching as high as fifth in 2009. Last season, St. Cloud State placed 12th with Hannah Arason earning the NSIC Championship in the Heptathlon while adding an All-NSIC mark in the Javelin. Sophomore middle distance runner Brooklyn Brouse and graduate student jumper Paola Brena were respectively named the Huskies' Track and Field Athletes to Watch entering the 2023 Outdoor campaign. Brouse ran on three top-10 finishing events at the 2022 Outdoor Championships, taking ninth in the 400 Meter Hurdles and 4x400 Meter Relay while taking 10th in the 4x100 Meter Relay. Brena is fresh off a runner-up mark in the High Jump at the Indoor Championships and was a First Team Outdoor All-American in the High Jump at Franklin Pierce in 2019. Under head coach Sam Kettenhofen, 19 student-athletes have earned All-NSIC finishes at the Outdoor Championships while adding a Conference Champion in each of the last two conference meets.
