Huskies ready for Maverick Open #1 and #1 on Wednesday and Saturday
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Track & Field closes the 2023 Outdoor regular season with a pair of meets this week in Mankato as they are scheduled to compete at the Maverick Open #1 on Wednesday and the Maverick Open #2 on Saturday. Wednesday's meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. CT with an 11:00 a.m. CT start on Saturday.
LAST TIME ON THE TRACK
St. Cloud State Track & Field saw seven student-athletes record personal bests while claiming one event title – Destiny Baughman in the Triple Jump – in a strong day of competition at the Ron Masanz Classic in Moorhead on Saturday. The Huskies distance group opened things up with a great showing in the 1500 Meter as Clara Welhouse (4:52.49) took third, Cheresa Bouley (4:55.52) and Greta Freed (5:02.63) placed seven-eight while both Cambrie Kowal (5:14.28) and Erica Conrad (5:18.21) landed in the top 20. Shelby Romig (15.46s) finished seventh in the 100 Meter Hurdles, followed by an Ainhoa Toquero (16.26s) PR in the top 11. Brooklyn Brouse (58.58s) and Mariana Guerra-Reese (1:00.42) both PR'd in the 400 Meter to take second and fourth respectively, then Katie Lavato (12.69s) earned a fifth-place finish in the 100 Meter as Ava Wilmanns ran a personal best 13.73s and Sydney Rustad added a 13.95s to both land in the top 15. Makaylin Christenson kept the PR's rolling with a 2:34.00 finish in the 800 Meter for eighth while Jaileen Medina joined her in the top 10 with a 2:40.63 time. Lavato (26.12s) and Romig (28.11s) wrapped up the running events by finishing runner-up and 10th respectively in the 200 Meter. Destiny Baughman headlined the SCSU performance in the field by winning the Triple Jump with a 10.59m leap while Julia Rowles recorded a runner-up clear of 1.63m in the High Jump and Ainhoa Toquero soared over a personal best 1.58m to mark fifth. Baughman led the Long Jump group with a seventh-place 5.06m mark, joined by Toquero (4.76m) and Ava Wilmanns (4.50m) in the top 14 as the latter recorded her second-straight PR in the event. Dacoda Zimmerman represented the Huskies in the throws, taking seventh in the Shot Put with a 12.03m toss.
NATIONALLY RANKED HUSKIES
Two Huskies can be found across the NCAA DII rankings entering the week, led by No. 4 Paola Brena (1.73m) in the High Jump while Parker Buske (12.09m) ranks No. 27 nationally in the Triple Jump.
GOING THE DISTANCE
The SCSU distance group has enjoyed a strong Outdoor season, as Greta Freed (39:39.07) and Cambrie Kowal (40:44.28) currently rank No. 9 and No. 13 respectively in the NSIC's 10,000 Meter. Cheresa Bouley (11:18.96), Clara Welhouse (11:36.80) and Erica Conrad (12:18.46) each rank in the top 11 of the 3000 Meter Steeplechase rankings while Mariana Guerra-Reese (2:17.66) headlines the middle distance corps at No. 14 in the 800 Meter.

Sophomore middle distance standout Brooklyn Brouse enters the final week of the Outdoor season ranked No. 8 in the NSIC with a 1:03.25 time in the 400 Hurdles while landing at No. 12 in the 400 Meter with a 58.58s low mark.
CLEARING THE BAR
St. Cloud State's historically strong jumps group has continued their success this spring as Paola Brena (1.73m) ranks No. 2 in the NSIC and No. 4 nationally in the High Jump while Julia Rowles (1.64m) is at No. 6 in the conference standings. Ainhoa Toquero (1.58m) checks in at No. 16, giving the Huskies a potential three podiums at the conference meet next week.

St. Cloud State Track & Field was picked to finish 10th in the 2023 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Huskies have placed top 10 in the NSIC Outdoor Championships in 11 of 13 conference meets during the program's Northern Sun membership, reaching as high as fifth in 2009. Last season, St. Cloud State placed 12th with Hannah Arason earning the NSIC Championship in the Heptathlon while adding an All-NSIC mark in the Javelin. Sophomore middle distance runner Brooklyn Brouse and graduate student jumper Paola Brena were respectively named the Huskies' Track and Field Athletes to Watch entering the 2023 Outdoor campaign. Brouse ran on three top-10 finishing events at the 2022 Outdoor Championships, taking ninth in the 400 Meter Hurdles and 4x400 Meter Relay while taking 10th in the 4x100 Meter Relay. Brena is fresh off a runner-up mark in the High Jump at the Indoor Championships and was a First Team Outdoor All-American in the High Jump at Franklin Pierce in 2019. Under head coach Sam Kettenhofen, 19 student-athletes have earned All-NSIC finishes at the Outdoor Championships while adding a Conference Champion in each of the last two conference meets.
