Huskies fall 4-3 to Vikings in eight innings, three named to All-Tournament Team
ROCHESTER, Minn. - The St. Cloud State softball team's 2023 season would come to a close after a hard-fought Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Tournament run. After a lighting delay that pushed the second half of the Huskies vs Augustana game from Friday to Saturday, SCSU was unable to push past the top seeded Vikings falling 4-3 in eight innings. St. Cloud State ended its season compiling a 34-20 overall record and 16-8 finish in NSIC play.
Graduate catcher Sydney Trees, graduate designated player Jasmin Estrada, and senior pitcher Trinity Junker were named to the NSIC All-Tournament Team for their performances.
ST. CLOUD STATE (3) VS AUGUSTANA (4)
The Vikings would strike first as they opened with a two-run home run with the Huskies falling behind 2-0 in the first inning. St. Cloud State would cut it to a one-run game as Sydney Trees blasted a solo home run over the center field fence making it 2-1.
In the fourth inning, Maggie Fitzgerald would make a game changing play as she sent a rocket over left field. Fitzgerald put the Huskies on top 3-2 after sending a deep two-run home run.
At the top of the fifth, the game would be delayed due to lighting. With the weather worsening, a decision was made to push the conclusion of the game to Saturday, May 6.
Picking up in the fifth inning, the Huskies were looking to extend their lead, but the inning would end with one left on base. Augustana would tie things up in the bottom half of five after an RBI single brought in a runner.
Neither team would be able to make a play in the seventh as the game would extend to eight. The Huskies would be unable to generate any offense in the top half of the eighth. Taking the field in the bottom half, SCSU was looking to get a stop but a bunt by an Augustana batter put a runner in scoring position. A single to left center walked-off their runner, ending the Huskies tournament run falling 4-3 to Augustana.
Justyce Porter opened the first two innings allowing three hits and three runs. Trinity Junker came in for relief for the next five where she struck out one with seven hits, two runs, and two walks. Fitzgerald went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run.
