Hawkey scores first career goal to lead Huskies to victory
HOUGHTON, Mich. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) scored in the first 10 minutes of the game and held on for the rest of the game in a 1-0 season-opening victory over Michigan Tech (0-1-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC) on Thursday night in Houghton, Mich. Junior forward Ariel Hawkey (Graham, Wis.) scored her first career goal to lead the Huskies to its first win in a season opener since 2017.

Hawkey's goal happened just 8:55 into the game to give the Huskies the momentum early. Sophomore forward Ellie Primerano (Saint Joseph, Mich.) recorded the assist on the goal.

- In her collegiate debut, freshman goalkeeper Jaylee Strickland (Columbus, Ohio) made three saves and recorded her first career shutout.
- With the win, St. Cloud State improves to 2-5-2 all-time against Michigan Tech, with its last win coming on Sept. 3, 2017, a 1-0 win in St. Cloud.
- The season-opening victory marked the 13th time in program history SCSU has opened its season with a victory and the first since a 3-0 win over Northern Michigan on Sept. 1 to open the 2017 season.
- In addition to being her first career goal, Hawkey recorded her first career game-winning goal.
- Five Huskies made their collegiate debut and seven made their SCSU debut in the game. Freshman midfielder Cady Compton (Ankeny, Iowa), freshman forward Zoey Fanter (Norwalk, Iowa), freshman defender Grace Olson (West Des Moines, Iowa), freshman defender Ana Spaine (Wets Des Moines, Iowa) and Linsey Trapino (Verona, Wis.) all made their collegiate debuts. Sophomore defender Ella Clow (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior forward Krysten Schuster (Beamsville, Ontario) made their Husky debuts after transferring from St. Thomas and Drury, respectively.
