Both St. Cloud State Softball Games End 9-1 in Second Day at Washburn Invitational

Huskies take down Maryville (Mo.) in five innings and fall to No. 18 Pittsburg State in six
TOPEKA, Kan. – St. Cloud State Softball (8-3, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) split its two games on Saturday with Maryville (Mo.) (2-10, 0-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) and No. 18 Pittsburg State (11-2, 0-0 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) in Topeka in the second day of competition at the Washburn Invitational.
The Huskies took down the Saints, 9-1, in 5 innings and later fell to the No. 18 ranked Gorillas, 9-1, in 6 innings.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 9, MARYVILLE (MO.) 1
The Huskies poured in three runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings and only allowed one in the third, ending the game after five innings.
The Huskies three in the second inning came from a three-run shot off the bat of redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.), her first of the season. Maryville responded in the next half inning with an RBI single to cut the Huskies lead to two.
SCSU scored three more in the third after junior outfielder/catcher, Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) mashed a three-run home run of her own, pushing the Huskies lead to five.
In the home half of the fifth, freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) knocked in fifth-year right fielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) and freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) with a single. Two batters later, senior center fielder Tenley Quesnell (Boise, Idaho) singled, scoring Weiss, ending the game at 9-1 after 5 innings.

SCSU trailed 7-0 after PSU picked up a run in the first, two in the second and four in the fourth. Junior corner infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) sent a solo shot over the left field to give the Huskies their first run of the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pittsburg State got a two-run home run from a pinch hitter, ending the game at 9-1. The Huskies were outhit 13-3 by the No. 18 ranked Gorillas.

The Huskies close out the Washburn Invitation Sunday with tilts against Central Missouri at 10 a.m. and Fort Hays State (Kan.) at 2 p.m. The first game will be played at Gahnstrom Field and the second will be played at Lake Shawnee 2.
