St. Cloud State Softball Splits Matchups in Final Day at Washburn Invitational

Huskies fall to Central Missouri, beat Fort Hays State (Kan.) to complete trip to Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. – St. Cloud State Softball (9-4, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) split its final two games of the Washburn Invitational on Sunday against Central Missouri (6-4, 0-0 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) and Fort Hays State (Kan.) (9-5, 0-0 MIAA) in Topeka.
SCSU dropped the opener to the Jennies, 4-2 but came back to beat the Tigers, 6-2 in the second game.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 2, CENTRAL MISSOURI 4
Central Missouri didn't waste any time putting itself in the scoresheet, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Huskies responded two innings later, taking a 2-1 lead, after fifth-year right fielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) hit an RBI double, scoring junior outfielder/catcher, Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) and senior center fielder Tenley Quesnell (Boise, Idaho).
The Jennies reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after two doubles drove in three runs. SCSU was unable to put anyone on base in its final two half innings, falling 4-2.
Top Huskies
FHSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after a solo home run. St. Cloud State responded in a big way in the next half inning, knocking in four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Junior corner infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) walked and Holmes hit a double to start the inning before the next player, senior designated player Evy Polsfuss (Apple Valley, Minn.) crushed a three run home run. Two batters later, redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) hit a solo shot to extend the Huskies lead to three.
In the top of the fifth, the Tigers hit a sacrifice fly to bring themselves within two runs. In the bottom half, Holzhueter hit a leadoff solo home run to give the Huskies an added cushion to their lead while junior left fielder Madison Spah (Ramsey, Minn.) was driven in by freshman outfielder Bree Beck (Lakeville, Minn.) who hit a sacrifice fly, giving the Huskies another insurance run.
Junior right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.) went the distance and picked up her fourth win of the season. She allowed five hits, two runs, and three walks over 7.0 innings and struck out.

The Huskies are off until Monday, Mar. 4 when they begin their "The Spring Games" schedule in Auburndale, Fla. The Huskies will play eight games over five days. On March 4 they play Thomas More (Ky.) (9 a.m. CT) and Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) (11:15 a.m. CT), on March 5 they play Montana State Billings (9:15 a.m. CT) and Staten Island (N.Y.) (11:15 a.m. CT), on March 7 they play Northwood (Mich.) (9 a.m. CT) and Thomas More again (2 p.m. CT) and on March 8 they play Quincy (Ill.) (12:30 p.m. CT) and Clarion (Pa.) (3 p.m. CT).
