St. Cloud State Softball Only Allows Two Runs in Sweep of Opening Day at THE Spring Games

Huskies outscore Thomas More (Ky.) and Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.), 13-2 in pair of wins
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – St. Cloud State Softball (11-4, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) opened its spring break trip to Florida with a pair of wins on Monday. The Huskies beat Thomas More (Ky.) (1-10, 0-0 Great Midwest Athletic Conference), 9-1 in a shortened four-inning game to open THE Spring Games play and came back to beat Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) (12-6, 0-0 GMAC), 4-1 in the second game.
SCSU gave up just one earned run on the day as opposing hitters only managed a .162 batting average. The Huskies offense scored 13 runs in 11 innings and were led by junior corner infielder Maggie Fitzgerald (Oak Lawn, Ill.) who went 3-4 with two home runs and five RBI. Fifth-year right fielder Holly Weinberger (Waconia, Minn.) went 4-6 and freshman catcher Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) was the other Husky to record at least three hits, going 3-5.
GAME ONE (Final/4 inn.): ST. CLOUD STATE 9, THOMAS MORE 1
Thomas More scored a run in the top of the first inning after a pair of walks were followed up by a wild pitch, giving the Saints an early 1-0 lead. Junior right handed pitcher Molly Gross (Columbia Heights, Minn.) was able to escape the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs. Junior left fielder, Reese Holzhueter (Shakopee, Minn.) scored on a fielder's choice, Weiss hit a two-RBI single and redshirt freshman third baseman Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) hit an RBI single.
SCSU poured in another four-run inning in the bottom of the third to take an 8-1 lead. Fitzgerald hit a two-run home run to highlight the inning, followed by a pair of unearned runs came in after a throwing error.
Fitzgerald ended the game in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored senior second baseman Lydia Krueger (Appleton, Wis.).
Top Huskies
SCSU gave up another first inning run, picking up an early 1-0 deficit. There were just a combined two hits over the next two innings, before the Huskies responded in the top of the fourth. Fitzgerald hit a leadoff solo home run and Frechette hit an RBI-double, giving SCSU its first lead of the game at 2-1.
There was just one hit in the following two innings before the Huskies received two insurance runs in the top of the 7th after a Weinberger hit an RBI single and a Fitzgerald scored Krueger on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore right handed pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) was able to finish the game off with three straight groundouts.
Porter earned the win after four innings of hitless relief. The Huskies got a strong start from junior right handed pitcher Emma Eickhoff (Becker, Minn.), who gave up just two hits and one unearned run in three innings, striking out three.

- Frechette is on a three-game hitting streak.
