St. Cloud State Softball Falls Twice in Second Day of MIAA/NSIC Crossover Challenge

Huskies drop doubleheader against No. 11 Central Oklahoma
PITTSBURG, Kan. – St. Cloud State Softball (16-8, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) dropped both games of its doubleheader against No. 11 Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon in Pittsburg in its second day of the the MIAA/NSIC Crossover Challenge.
GAME ONE (5 INN.): ST. CLOUD STATE 0, #11 CENTRAL OKLAHOMA 9
Central Oklahoma (20-6, 4-0 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) hit a two-run triple in the second inning and solo home run in the third to take a 3-0 lead. In the Huskies next two half-innings up to bat, they tallied three hits but were unable to score any runs.
The Bronchos added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning, pouring in six runs on six hits. The Huskies also made two errors. UCO hit two two-run home runs, a sacrifice fly and an RBI-double to extend its lead to nine.
SCSU opened the bottom half of the inning with a single, but after back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout, the game ended at 9-0 after five innings,
Top Huskies
UCO started the second game strong, scoring one run in the first, one in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth to take a commanding 9-0 lead into the fifth inning. The Bronchos recorded 10 hits during that stretch while SCSU only tallied one.
The Huskies offense showed up in the top of the fifth, scored six runs on six hits to cut its deficit to three. Freshman infielder Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) hit a solo homerun to get the SCSU momentum rolling. Holzhueter followed that up with a home run of her own, scoring two more for the Huskies. Fitzgerald hit a two-RBI double and freshman shortstop Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) hit an RBI-single to give SCSU a chance going into the final innings.
Neither team scored the rest of the way as the Huskies dropped their third consecutive game, 9-6.
