St. Cloud State Tennis Drops Close Match to Mankato 4-3

Huskies lose fourth consecutive match
Winona, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (3-6, 1-3 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) was defeated by Minnesota State Mankato (6-4, 4-1 NSIC) 4-3 Sunday afternoon. The Huskies dropped the doubles point after only winning one match and then their comeback attempt would fall short after winning three singles matches. St. Cloud State is now 0-4 on the season in matches decided by one point.
DOUBLES
SCSU dropped the doubles point after being defeated in two of the three matches. In the No. 1 spot, junior Claudia Muñoz Perez (Tarragona, Spain) and freshman Lara-Maria Schaefer (Nuremberg, Germany) were defeated 6-2 by Freia Lawrence and Avery Stilwell. The Mavericks would clinch the doubles point as Elizabeth Felderman and McKenna DeMarce defeated Johana Brower (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Maria Paz Aoki (Marcos Paz, Argentina) in the No. 2 spot. Sophomore Oriana Grott (Warsaw, Poland) and freshman Brooklyn Broadwell (Thief River Falls, Minn.) captured a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot. The Huskies have now lost the doubles point in three consecutive matches.
SINGLES
Trailing 0-1 in the match, SCSU needed to win four of the six matches to secure a victory but were only able to win three. Schaefer put the Huskies on the board with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Taylor Julsrud in the No. 4 spot. Broadwell gave SCSU a 2-1 advantage in the match after picking up a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 5 spot. Mankato would win the next two matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to take a 3-2 lead. Senior Maria Molitor (Delano, Minn.) tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 victory in the No. 6 spot. The final match would come down to Grott and McKenna DeMarce in the No. 3 spot. DeMarce would win the first set 6-2, but Grott flipped the script in the second set as she produced a 6-2 win. In the third and final set, DeMarce would win 6-3 and clinch the match for the Mavericks.
