St. Cloud State Tennis Rallies to Complete 4-3 Comeback in Season Opener against Minnesota Crookston

Gibby Chapman seals the win with a three-set victory
Sartell, Minn. – St. Cloud State Tennis (1-0) picked up a 4-3 win in their season opener against Minnesota Crookston Friday afternoon. After trailing 3-1 in the match, the Huskies rallied with three straight singles wins to come away with the victory.
Doubles
St. Cloud State captured the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Crookston took the first match as they came away with a win at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell picked up a 6-3 victory as each team now held a doubles win. At the No. 1 spot, Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki battled against Daniela de Lucas Rivera and Asli Oktay, but would ultimately come away with a 6-4 victory as St. Cloud State would lead 1-0.
Singles
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, Minnesota Crookston won the first three matches in straight sets as they would now lead 3-1. At the No. 5 spot, Lara-Maria Schaefer got the comeback attempt started for the Huskies with a 7(7)-6(1), 6-3 win. Johana Brower kept the momentum rolling for the Huskies as a straight set victory in the No. 2 spot tied the match at 3-3. The deciding point would come down to the No. 6 spot where freshman Gibby Chapman took on Abril Manas Hernandez. Chapman took the first set 6-3, but Manas Hernadez responded with a 6-4 victory in set two. With the match and game on the final, Chapman came up big for the Huskies with a 6-2 victory for her first collegiate victory. The Huskies start the season in the win column with a 4-3 win against Minnesota Crookston.
