St. Cloud State Tennis Readies for Home Opener at the Sta-Fit Tennis Center

Huskies play UMary and Jamestown
St. Cloud, MN. – St. Cloud State Tennis (1-3, 1-1 NSIC) will play their first two matches at home this weekend as they host UMary on Friday, February 20 and then Jamestown on Saturday, February 21. Friday's match is set for 3:30 p.m. while Saturday's will begin at 12:30 p.m.

St. Cloud State opened up conference play this past weekend as they traveled to Duluth, MN.
Huskies Drop Conference Opener with 5-2 Loss to Bemidji State- February 14, 2026
Bemidji State would take the first doubles match in the No. 2 spot by score of 6-3. St. Cloud State would respond with a 6-3 win of their own in the No. 1 spot as Liliana Ruy Sánchez Mendivil and Lara-Maria Schaefer came out victorious. The Beavers would again come away with a 6-3 win, this time in the No. 3 spot to take the point.
Moving into singles play, BSU opened with a win in the No. 6 spot. Sánchez Mendivil put the first point on the board for SCSU with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win in the No. 1 spot. The Beavers extended their lead to 3-1 following a straight set win in the No. 5 spot. Schaefer kept the Huskies alive with her own straight set win to set the score at 3-2. The remaining two matches would both go into a third set as Margarita Vinichenko and Gibby Chapman went back-and-forth against BSU in long matches. Bemidji State would ultimately come away with wins in both matches to finalize the score at 5-2.

Huskies Capture First Win With 5-2 Victory Over Minnesota Duluth- February 15, 2026
UMD would open the match by taking the first match in the No. 3 spot by score of 6-2. The Huskies would respond with a 6-2 victory of their own as Lara-Maria Schafer and Liliana Ruy Sánchez Mendivil came out victorious in the No. 1 spot. To secure the doubles point, Gibby Chapman and Brooklyn Broadwell tallied a 6-3 victory in the No. 2 spot. This was the first time that St. Cloud State took the doubles point this season.
Moving into singles play, the Bulldogs would tie the match with a victory in the No. 4 spot. Schaefer retook the lead for the Huskies with a straight set win in the No. 3 spot. Margarita Vinichenko followed with a straight set win of her own as SCSU took a commanding 3-1 lead. Sánchez Mendivil would secure the victory for the Huskies with a 7-5, 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot. Broadwell added the fourth straight set singles win as the score would be finalized at 5-2 in favor of St. Cloud State.

NSIC Player of the Week
Following the Huskies 1-1 weekend, freshman Liliana Ruy Sánchez Mendivil was named NSIC Player of the Week on Tuesday. Sánchez Mendivil went 4-0 across the No.1 singles and No. 1 doubles slot this week with two straight set singles wins. She is the first Husky to receive the honor since Gibby Chapman did last season.

Friday's match against UMary will be the 24th meeting between the Huskies and Marauders with the Huskies trailing the series 11-12. They have won eight straight over SCSU including the lone meeting last year.
St. Cloud State Tennis Falls 5-2 Against UMary-March 29, 2025
UMary came up with the first win of the day with a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 doubles position, but Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell captured their own 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot. With each team holding a doubles win, the deciding point would come down to Johana Brower & Gibby Chapman against Maria Estinvil & Anna Sueflohn of UMary. The Marauders came up with a 6-3 victory as they clinched the doubles point.
Moving into singles play trailing 1-0, St. Cloud State would be defeated in the first three matches in straight sets at the No. 5, No. 1, and No. 3 spots as UMary secured the victory. Brower battled back and forth in the No. 2 spot, but was ultimately defeated 6-2, 2-6, 4-6. Lara-Maria Schaefer had her own battle in the No. 4 spot and came out victorious with a third set victory to give the Huskies their first point of the match. Broadwell tacked on her own third set victory in the No. 6 spot to set the final score at 5-2.

Saturday's match against Jamestown will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
Scouting UMary
The UMary Marauders come into this match holding an 0-3 record following losses to Gustavus Adolphus, Augustana, and Sioux Falls. UMary is coming off a 2025 season where they produced a 6-10 record with a 5-4 mark in the NSIC. They would reach the NSIC Tournament but lose in the first round to MSU Moorhead.
The offseason saw UMary lose their three All-Singles players in Chloe Chong, Ilona Freitag, and Maria Estinvil. Chong and Freitag made First Team while Estinvil was Second Team. The trio also made the All-Doubles team along with Anna Sueflohn who returns this season.
Through three matches, Elizabete Lekse leads UMary in singles with a 2-1 record in the No. 2 spot. No duo of Marauders have multiple wins in doubles play.

Scouting Jamestown
The Jamestown Jimmies come into this match holding a 1-2 record with their lone win coming against Sioux Falls. Their losses were against Gustavus Adolphus and Augustana. This is the inaugural of the program, and they were projected to finish sixth in the NSIC.
Julie van Zeijl leads Jamestown with a 5-1 overall record with a 2-1 mark in the No. 1 singles spot and a 3-0 record in the No. 1 doubles spot. She has teamed with her sister, Bodil van Zeijl in doubles to go undefeated. Bodil is 2-1 in the No. 2 singles spot.
Head Coach Cameron Jackson enters his first season with Jamestown in 2026. He previously spent time at Declo High School in Idaho as their Head Coach.
