St. Cloud State Softball Pitches Two Shutouts on Day Four of Space Coast Spring Games

Huskies shut out Roosevelt and Gannon, move to 15-3 overall
MELBOURNE, Fla. – St. Cloud State Softball (15-3, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) pitched a pair of shutouts on Wednesday at the Space Coast Spring Games at the Space Coast Complex in Melbourne. The Huskies shut out Roosevelt (Ill.) (6-9, 0-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), 5-0 in game one and Gannon (Pa.) (2-3, 0-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference), 1-0 in game two.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 5, ROOSEVELT 0
The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when junior catcher/infielder Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) hit an RBI-single and redshirt junior infielder Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring Weiss home from third. SCSU doubled its lead two innings later with a 2-RBI double from Weiss and added its fifth and final run of the game in the seventh inning with an RBI-single from redshirt freshman infielder Hannah Weckman (Lakeville, Minn.).
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Kunz (Lyons, Ill.) pitched her first collegiate shutout in the victory, tossing 7.0 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits. She also posted eight strikeouts and only walked two batters.
TOP HUSKIES
SCSU plated the lone run of the game after redshirt sophomore utility Kaylee Collins (Lakeville, Minn.) hit an RBI-double in the bottom of the second inning. Senior pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) was excellent in the shutout, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings while only allowing four hits. She also struck out three batters and issued just one walk.

The Huskies have their final off day of the trip on Thursday and return to Space Coast Spring Games action on Friday against Holy Family (Pa.) (2-2, 0-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) and Charleston (W.Va.) (9-7, 0-0 Mountain East) with first pitches scheduled or 9 a.m. CT and 11:15 a.m. CT respectively. - Kunz earned her first career shutout in her second career complete game. Her eight strikeouts were a new career high. She lowered her season ERA to 0.34, WHIP to 0.82 and opponents' batting average to .145.
- Weiss hit two doubles which is tied for the most by a Husky so far this season. She recorded her eighth multi-hit game, fifth multi-RBI game and third 3+ RBI game of the season, all of which lead the Huskies. This season, Weiss leads the team in batting average (.414), hits (25), doubles (five) and RBIs (18).
- Weckman recorded her first career multi-hit game.
- Junior infielder Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) extended her on-base streak to a season-best 11 games.
- Senior infielder Sydney Roe (Davenport, Iowa) did not reach base for the first time this season, so her on-base streak ends at 16 games, and her season best seven-game hit streak also came to a close.
