Huskies to play Minnesota Crookston and MSU Moorhead
St. Cloud, MN. – St. Cloud State Tennis (3-10, 1-7 NSIC) return to the Sta-Fit Tennis Center this weekend to wrap up their regular season. On Friday, April 10, the Huskies will take on Minnesota Crookston before playing MSU Moorhead on Sunday, April 12. Friday's match will be played at 3:30 p.m. while Sunday's match is set for 12:30 p.m.

Huskies Drop 6-1 Match to Minnesota State- March 28, 2026
The Mavericks would take the doubles point as they opened with a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot and then a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot. In the No. 1 spot, Liliana Ruy Sánchez Mendivil and Lara-Maria Schaefer battled in a hard-fought match and came away with a 6-4 victory.
Moving to singles play, Minnesota State came away with three straight set wins as they clinched the match. After dropping the first set in the No. 3 spot, Schaefer rallied back with a 7-6 (7-5) win in set two. She completed the comeback with a 10-8 victory in the third set to put the lone point on the board for the Huskies. The Mavericks would ultimately win by score of 6-1.

Doubles (2, 3, 1)
St. Cloud State would take the first match in doubles as Liliana Ruy Sánchez Mendivil & Lara-Maria Schaefer produced a 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot. Winona State would respond with a close 7-5 win in the No. 3 spot before winning 6-4 in the No. 2 spot to secure the doubles point.
Moving to singles play, the Warriors came away with victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 slots to take a 3-0 lead. Schaefer put the first point on the board for SCSU with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 2 spot. Brooklyn Broadwell tallied a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 3 spot to set the score at 3-2. WSU would clinch the match in the No. 3 spot with a straight set victory. Sánchez Mendivil battled into the third set in the No. 1 spot, but would ultimately fall 6-4, 2-6, 7-10 as the score finalized at 5-2 in favor of Winona State.

Sunday's match against MSU Moorhead will serve as Senior Day for the Huskies. They will honor their lone graduating senior in Brooklyn Broadwell. She holds a career record of 42-40 and has earned NSIC All-Academic honors and CSC Academic All-District as an accounting major.
Series History
Friday's match against Minnesota Crookston will be the 27th match between the Huskies and Golden Eagles with SCSU holding a 24-2 advantage. The teams faced off twice last season where each team earned a victory.
St. Cloud State Tennis Rallies to Complete 4-3 Comeback in Season Opener against Minnesota Crookston- January 31, 2025
St. Cloud State captured the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Crookston took the first match as they came away with a win at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell picked up a 6-3 victory as each team now held a doubles win. At the No. 1 spot, Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki battled against Daniela de Lucas Rivera and Asli Oktay, but would ultimately come away with a 6-4 victory as St. Cloud State would lead 1-0.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, Minnesota Crookston won the first three matches in straight sets as they would now lead 3-1. At the No. 5 spot, Lara-Maria Schaefer got the comeback attempt started for the Huskies with a 7(7)-6(1), 6-3 win. Johana Brower kept the momentum rolling for the Huskies as a straight set victory in the No. 2 spot tied the match at 3-3. The deciding point would come down to the No. 6 spot where freshman Gibby Chapman took on Abril Manas Hernandez. Chapman took the first set 6-3, but Manas Hernadez responded with a 6-4 victory in set two. With the match and game on the final, Chapman came up big for the Huskies with a 6-2 victory for her first collegiate victory. The Huskies start the season in the win column with a 4-3 win against Minnesota Crookston.

Minnesota Crookston would take the first match at the No. 1 spot as Daniela de Lucas Rivera and Ariadna Solis Guals defeated Maria Paz Aoki and Johana Brower 6-3. The Huskies would take the next match as Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schafer came away with a 6-3 win of their own. The Golden Eagles would clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.
With a 1-0 lead, Crookston came away with all six wins in singles play, five of which in straight sets to sweep the Huskies. Lara-Maria Schaefer was the lone Husky to win a set, but she would be defeated 3-6, 6-4, 5-10 in the No. 5 spot.

The Huskies got off to a strong start in doubles play as Brooklyn Broadwell and Oriana Grott captured a 6-2 win in the No. 3 spot. The Dragons came away with a victory in the No. 1 position as the doubles point came down to the No. 2 spot. In what was a tightly contested match, Gibby Chapman and Johana Brower came away with a 7-5 victory as St. Cloud State secured the doubles point.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, SCSU would be defeated in the first three singles matches as MSUM now held a 3-1 lead. Lara-Maria Schaefer came up with a big straight set victory in the No. 4 spot as the Huskies now trailed 3-2. In the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott battled back and forth with Katryna Hansen but would fall in the third set as the Dragons clinched the match. Broadwell added on a straight set victory to finalize the score at 4-3.

The Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles come into this match holding an 8-8 record with a 5-3 mark in the NSIC. Their five conference wins have come against Winona State, Bemidji State, Minnesota Duluth, Jamestown, and UMary as they are seeded fourth in the NSIC standings. UMC is currently on a five-match winning streak. They are coming off a 2025 season where they produced a 7-9 record and reached the NSIC Tournament. Coming into this season, the Golden Eagles were projected to finish fifth in the NSIC.

The MSU Moorhead Dragons come into this match holding a 3-11 record with a 2-6 mark in the NSIC. They are currently seeded ninth in the standings with wins against UMary and Jamestown. The Dragons are in the midst of a seven-match losing streak. MSUM is coming off a 2025 season where they went 12-9 and reached the NSIC Tournament. They would beat UMary 4-0 before falling to Augustana 4-0. Coming into this season, the Dragons were projected to finish ninth in the NSIC.
The Dragons return one of their two All-Conference players from last season in Luzmary Diaz Castillo. She earned First Team All-Singles and First Team All-Doubles while being selected as the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year.
Diaz Castillo leads MSUM in singles wins with 12 and is followed by Sophia Felderman who has 10 and Camilla Bonini who has eight. In doubles, Diaz Castillo and Felderman hold a 9-3 record.
Head Coach Damien O'Donnell enters his first season with MSUM. He was previously the top assistant for the Dragons for the three years prior.
