
SCSU Track & Field Set to Host the Van Nelson Open

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State Track & Field is set to host the annual Van Nelson Open Saturday at the Halenbeck Fieldhouse sponsored by the Endurunce Shop. The meet is set to get underway at 11 a.m.
Leon Cheneyon was named NSIC Athlete of the Week for February 5th. Cheneyon had an outstanding performance at the Ted Nelson Classic this past weekend. Leon earned a first place title in the 400m dash with a national qualifying provisional time of 49.84. With this time he is first place in conference standings in the 400m dash. Cheneyon is also a member of the Huskies' 4x400m relay team, which took second place at the Ted Nelson Classic posting a provisional time of 3:22.11
This Huskies have competed in four meets so far this season and competed well at those meets. This last weekend SCSU competed at the Ted Nelson Classic hosted by Minnesota State University, Mankato.
In the women's 200m dash Rebecca Schmidt brought home a first place finish with a time of 25.80, which is a personal best for her and a national qualifying provisional mark. Alicia Evans also recorded a first place finish in the 400m dash, posting a time of 59.79. In the women's long jump it was the Huskies' Laure Olson taking first place with a distance of 17-5.50, also a personal best.
Both the women's 4x400m (Ellen Wikstrom, Olson, Alicia Evans, and Alesha McPhail) and the men's 4x400m (Cohen, Suber, Brian Hervin, and Cheneyon) relays took second place. In the men's 4x400m relay with a time of 3:22.11, SCSU is almost four seconds faster than in all of indoor last season and have a national qualifying provisional time.
JaVonte Suber right behind in second place with a time of 50.19. Rashad Cohen captured the title in the 60m hurdles. The Huskies took second place in the men's high jump as well with Dustin McColley.
Key athletes to watch this weekend are George Kawalawu and Alicia Evans.
Kawalawu is currently fourth in the conference standings in the 60 dash with a time of 6.92 that he posted at the Northwest Open earlier this season. He continues to improve and will be good to watch this weekend at the Van Nelson Open.
Evans has been performing very well so far this season. She recorded a first place finish in the 400m dash, posting a time of 59.79 last weekend at the Ted Nelson Classic. Evans is also a member of the women's 4x400m relay team that continues to move up in the conference standings.
The Huskies are excited to host a home meet this weekend and are extremely happy they can honor one of their alums with the meet as well.
