Sam Sunstrom Earns Ninth Place Nationally In 10,000m, Ryan Johnson Ranks 13th In The Hammer Throw and Keyshawn Davis Finishes 13th in the Long Jump

BRADENDON, Fla. – St. Cloud State's track and field programs had three athletes compete on the first day of the 2016 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, May 26, in Bradenton, Fla. at the IMG Academy.
Junior distance runner Sam Sunstrom had the team's highest finish of the day in placing ninth in the 10,000m in a time of 36.06.56. The event was won by Lauren Martin from Adams State in a time of 34.25.20. By placing in the top - 12 she was a Second Team All-American.
Senior thrower Ryan Johnson ended up placing 13th nationally in the hammer throw with a toss of 57.51m/188'8". The 57.51m came on his second throw of the afternoon, but was not enough to be one of the top nine that advanced to the finals. Darien Thorton of Grand Valley State won the competition with his throw of 71.21m/233'7".
Junior Keyshawn Davis competed in the long jump and also finished 13th in his event with his leap of 7.34m/24'1" on his second attempt. The event was won by Damarcus Simpson of Chadron State with his jump of 8.04m/26'4.50"
SCSU has three throwers competing in the discus on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. EST in Quinn Anderson, Johnson and Rafael Saez. Anderson enters the competition ranking fifth nationally in the event (56.02m/183'9), Johnson is 15th (53.60m/175'10") and Saez is 16th (53.07m/174'1". Anderson set the school and meet record in the event at the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship this season
On Saturday the program sees freshman Elijah Pitchford competing in the triple jump. He will leap at 4:45 p.m. EST on May 28. Pitchford enters the competition ranking 16th nationally in the event (15.15m/49'8.5")
