Outdoor Track & Field Programs Compete Well at USF Open

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The St. Cloud State outdoor track and field programs had several standout individual performances at the 2016 USF Open, hosted by the University of Sioux Falls, on Sunday, April 10, at Olson Stadium.
The two teams ended up winning a total of six events on the afternoon and had 16 top-three finishes. The teams also had four NCAA outdoor provisional qualifying performances.
Among the highlights and top finishers were senior thrower Ryan Johnson winning the men's hammer with his throw of 57.74m/189'05". The mark was also an NCAA outdoor provisional qualifying mark. Johnson also finished fifth in both the discus (47.79m/156'09") and the shot put (15.26m/50'00.75).
Freshman Elijah Pitchford won the triple jump with his school record leap of 15.15m/49'08.50". The mark was also an NCAA outdoor provisional qualifying mark. Junior teammate Keyshawn Davis finished as the runner up in the triple jump (13.79m/45'03.00"). Davis had a strong individual meet in winning the men's long jump (7.49m/24'07.00"). The leap in the long jump also provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships.
Freshman Desmond Deshay placed third in the long jump (6.84m/22'05.00").
Junior Patience Yalartai won the women's triple jump (11.44m/37'06.50") and finished second in the long jump (5.81m/19'00.75). The mark in the long jump also reached NCAA outdoor provisional standards.
Junior Quinn Anderson placed second in the men's discus with his NCAA provisional mark of 49.83m/163'06. Anderson also finished sixth in the shot put (14.76m/48'05.25").
Sophomore Isaiah Pitchford won the 400m dash (49.84), while his sophomore classmate Marcus Welk was the runner up (50.26m) in the event.
Freshman Vance Barnes won the 200m dash (22.78) and placed third in the 100m dash (11.08).
Junior Rachael Sakry earned second in the 800m (2:23.73) and ninth in the 1,500m (5:03.23).
Junior Johnathan Hess finished in second in the 5000m (16:35.66).
Sophomore Tom Bates placed third in the 400m hurdles (59.18).
The 4x400 relay team of freshman Peter Bates, sophomore Wyatt Vernon, senior Trevor Baumann and freshman Wezley Turner finished third (3:31.01)
