ST. PAUL, Minn.  – The St. Cloud State outdoor track and field programs were led by event wins from senior throwers Rafael Saez and Ryan Johnson at the Bolstroff Twilight on April 28 in a meet hosted by Macalester College. Junior Sam Sunstrom competed at the Drake Relays on Thursday and finished seventh in the 10,000m to set the school record.
The men's team sent a small delegation of throwers and one jumper to the meet in St. Paul, Minn. and ended up with three event wins and five top-three finishes plus 44 points.
Saez had a throw of 49.59m to win the discus. The throw was an NCAA outdoor provisional qualify mark, but didn't top his previous season-high in the event. He has now placed in the top two in the discus in four events in 2016.
The men's program were able to sweep and take each of the first three spots in the shot put with Johnson placed second with a 48.25m and junior Quinn Anderson finishing third (46.84m).
Additionally, Johnson earned an individual victory in the men's hammer with a 57.55m. It was his fourth win in the hammer this season and just failed to top his previous NCAA outdoor provisional qualifying mark of 57.93m set earlier this season.
Junior Jordan Yira also went to the Bolstroff Twilight and earned an event victory in the long jump (6.51m).
Besides placing seventh overall in the school record mark, Sunstrom time of 35:17.50 in the 10,000m also was the best among all Division II athletes in the event and achieved NCAA outdoor provisional qualifying standards.
Both outdoor track & field program continue competition at both the Drake Relays and the Drake Alternative over the weekend. The Drake Relay will be on Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30, in Des Moines, Iowa at Drake Stadium. The Drake Alternative, which is in St. Peter, Minn. on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College, will only be on Saturday, April 30, beginning at 9 a.m.
