BURNSVILLE, Minn. – St. Cloud State senior Ryan Johnson has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Male Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Tuesday, May 17, in vote of all the coaches in the conference.
Johnson (Amery, Wisconsin) earned 2016 NSIC All-Conference honors in the three events at last weekend's NSIC Championships and was the high point performer at the meet with a total of 26 points. His 26 points represented 28.5 percent of the team's 91 total points. Johnson began his meet by setting the meet and school record in the hammer throw with his toss of 60.86m/199'08". He broke the school record that he had set earlier in the season. The event win marked the seventh of the season for Johnson in the hammer. His throw also places him 13th nationally in the event and is an NCAA outdoor provisional qualifying mark. On the second day, he placed second in the discus with a throw of 53.60m/175'00" and also second in the shot put (15.89m/52'01.75"). His shot put throw was a season-best mark and his highest finish in the event this season. His discus throw was also a season-best mark and the fifth time he has finished among the top-three in the event on the campaign.
