SCSU Softball Wins Two in Kelly Laas Memorial Dome Invite

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University softball team won a pair of games Saturday afternoon in the Second Annual Kelly Laas Memorial Dome Invite.
St. Cloud State defeated Bemidji State 14-0 in five innings and Dickinson State University 4-2.
The Huskies are 7-5 overall and will play Minot State University in the Invite finale Sunday at 2 p.m.
Bemidji State Recap:
Pitchers Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) and Jackie Manrique (Chicago, Ill.) combined to produce a no hit shut out of the Beavers. Franks started the game and went four innings striking out eight. Manrique pitched the fifth inning and retired the side.
St. Cloud State had two big offensive innings. The Huskies scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning on an error, a two-run home run by catcher Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) and a two-run single from shortstop Kelly Olson.
The Huskies added eight runs in the fourth, scoring them on seven hits and one Bemidji State error.
Hogan had three hits, Olson had two hits and Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) had two hits for the Huskies.
Dickinson State Recap:
The Huskies pieced together four runs on six hits for the win against Dickinson State. Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to win the game for the Huskies.
After a lead-off triple by Taysia Kaufman led to Dickinson's first run in the top of the first, SCSU answered when Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill) doubled down the left field line to score Mikayla Hogan.
Dickinson State scored again in the top of the fourth when Janell LaRont led off the inning with a solo home run. Once again the Huskies answered when Steinle singled in Roan and tied the game 2-2 heading into the fifith.
Roan had two hits in the game. Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) started on the mound for the Huskies, pitched four innings and struck out five. Franks relieved Merritt in the fifth and also struck out five batters.
