Huskies drop two to #20 Winona State in NSIC softball opener

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State faced Winona State in the 2014 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opener Friday afternoon in the Husky Dome and the 20th ranked Warriors came away with a 7-2, 6-0 sweep of the Huskies.
St. Cloud State is 6-13 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC. Winona State is 19-3 and 2-0 in league play.
Game 1
In the opener Winona State garnered seven runs on nine hits and were first on the scoreboard with a two-run second inning. The Warriors added three runs in the third scoring two on a Mary Turitto single. Single runs in the fourth and sixth innings completed the scoring for Winona. Lexi Perez had three hits for the Warriors.
The Huskies scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third on a two rbi single from Megan Lehnen. Breana Canova was two for four at the plate and the Huskies had a total of five hits.
Kelly Franks pitched a complete game for the Huskies, striking out five batters. Ashley Walker pitched a complete game for Winona striking out two.
Game 2
A five run fourth inning and a complete game pitching performance by Hanna Lythberg highlighted the shutout. Lythberg faced 26 batters, struck out six and did not give up a walk. A two run single by Morgan Lintz topped the scoring for Winona. The Warriors had nine hits and Perez, Jessica Kullmann and Reed Karsten each had two hits.
St. Cloud State scattered four hits in the game with Tricia DeBoer going two for three at the plate. Senna Francesconi was the starting pitcher and threw four innings, giving up five hits and striking out four batters. Kendra Merritt pitched two innings of relief and rookie Rebecca Harps made the first pitching appearance of her collegiate career and struck out the first batter she faced in the seventh inning.
