SCSU Softball Drops Game One to Southwest; Game Two Ends in 15 Inning Tie

Marshall, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team traveled to Marshall, Minn. to take on Southwest Minnesota State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader this afternoon.
The Huskies fell to the Mustangs 5-7 in game one and tied 1-1 in an extended 16-inning game two.
St. Cloud State now holds a 7-15-1 overall record and is 1-4-1 in the NSIC. Southwest Minnesota State moves to 7-18 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play.
Game One Recap:
Heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Huskies held a 4-0 lead. The Mustangs went on a rally in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs to take a 7-4 advantage after five complete innings of play.
The Huskies attempted to make a sixth inning comeback, getting one run back on a fielder's choice RBI by Rebecca Harps (Yucaipa, Calif.). The Mustangs shut the Huskies down after that, recording a final 7-5 win.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound for the Huskies, pitching 4.1 innings before being credited with the loss. Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) relieved Franks, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up just three hits and one run.
St. Cloud State put together five runs on eight hits led by Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) who went three for three at the plate. Kelsie Fitch (Carver) finished with two hits and a team-high two RBI's.
Game Two Recap:
The start of game two seemed promising for the Huskies as they were able to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Alyssa Coletto (Aurora, Ill.) reached on a throwing error to score Canova.
The Huskies held the lead at 1-0 until Southwest tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
Dominant pitching and defense continued for an additional ten innings before the game was called a tie due to darkness after fifteen complete innings of play lasting three hours and 18 minutes.
Senna Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario) started on the mound for the Huskies, pitching six innings and giving up just four hits and striking out six before being relieved by Merritt. Merritt pitched 1.1 innings allowing just one hit before Kelly Franks entered. Franks pitched 7.2 innings, gave up only three hits and struck out seven batters.
