Huskies Split in Softball Doubleheader vs. Crookston

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University softball team hosted the University of Minnesota Crookston in a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games Tuesday afternoon. Rescheduled due to field conditions, the Huskies were the designated away team in today's match-up. The Huskies came away with a 9-0 five-inning win in game one and a 3-4 loss in game two.
The Huskies record moves to 8-18-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the NSIC. The University of Minnesota Crookston moves to 3-20 overall and 1-9 in conference action.
Game One Recap:
The Huskies were unstoppable both offensively and defensively in today's first game. They started out strong, scoring two runs in the top of the first thanks to RBI doubles by both Megan Lehnen (Burnsville) and Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.).
The Huskies carried their momentum into the second inning; scoring five runs off of five hits and one Golden Eagle error. Megan Larkin (Winchester, Oregon), Tricia DeBoer (Blooming Prairie), Alyssa Coletto (Aurora, Ill.) and Breana Canova each picked up hits in the inning.
St. Cloud State picked up one additional run in both the 4th and 5th innings to secure a 9-0 lead after five and an early end to the match-up.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) had a dominant game on the mound, starting and pitching a perfect four complete innings. Franks gave up no hits, no walks, and no runs and struck out seven batters. Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth, allowing no hits and striking out one.
The Huskies put together an impressive nine runs on 11 hits led by Breana Canova with a team-high three hits and four RBI's. DeBoer and Lehnen each finished with two hits.
Game Two Recap:
The Golden Eagles scored first, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the third off of an Allison Foley homerun.
St. Cloud State made a sixth inning run, scoring three to take a 3-1 lead midway through the sixth. The Huskies scored on a double by Breana Canova that raked in two runs followed by an RBI double by Jessica Goerger (Mankato).
The Golden Eagles made a final run, scoring three in the bottom of the sixth by putting together three hits to take a final 4-3 lead.
Kelly Franks started on the mound and was relieved by Senna Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario) due to injury after 1.1 innings. Francesconi pitched 3.2 innings and gave up just four hits and two runs while striking out four. Kendra Merritt was credited with the loss after pitching to UMC as they took the decisive lead in the bottom of the sixth.
The Huskies are scheduled to return to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13 as they take on Augustana College and Wayne State. The series is set to take place at Selke Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
