Austin Goergen wins Oxton and Gause Awards at 2016 Holiday/Huskies Open

St. Cloud State University senior Austin Goergen collected both tournament award at the 2016 Holiday Inn/Huskies Open on Saturday, Dec. 10.  In the weight bracket at 285-pounds, Goergen was recognized as the tournament's John Oxton "Outstanding Wrestler" Award winner and the Jack Gause "Most Falls in the Least Amount of Time" Award recipient.
Goergen charted a perfect 4-0 record in the 285-pound division to lead an impressive SCSUÂ showing at this year's Huskies Open, which was held in the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse. Â The #1 nationally ranked Huskies also gained first place finishes at the Open from Brett Velasquez (125), Jarred Oftedahl (133) and Larry Bomstad (157). Â SCSU's Uthman Rabiu and Vince Dietz also shared the top spot at 197-pounds.
In action at 285, Goergen posted three consecutive falls and then charted a 7-0 win over Carter Isley of DI rival Northern Iowa in the championship bout.  This was Goergen's third consecutive title at the Huskies Open.

At 125-pounds, Velasquez was 3-0 and gained the top spot with an 8-0 major decision over Paul Bianchi of North Dakota State. Â Oftedahl gained his victory at 133-pounds with a 3-0 record. Â He won the top spot with a fall over Noah Becker of St. John's at 1:00. Â The title marks Oftedahl's third consecutive championship at the Huskies Open. Â
In action at 157-pounds, Bomstad posted a 4-0 record that was capped by a 10-2 major decision win over teammate Travis Holt in the title match.  Holt placed second in the bracket and completed his tournament with a 4-1 record.  The pair of Rabiu and Dietz both coined 3-0 record in the 197-pound division.  Rabiu and Dietz opted not to wrestle in the spot for the championship at 197-pounds.
