The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (12-1, 3-0 NSIC) continued their dual match success in 2016-17 with a convincing 51-0 victory over cross county rival Saint John's University (6-3) on Thursday, Jan. 26 at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies dominated from start to finish with 10 consecutive bout victories starting with a 21-6 tech fall win by #6 Brett Velasquez at 125 pounds. Â SCSU gained a forfeit at 133-pounds before Travis Swanson posted a pin at 141-pounds to give SCSU an early 17-0 lead after three bouts.
In action at 149-pounds, James Pleski charted an 18-2 tech fall win over SJU's Jake Fernholz.  SCSU scored three more points with a decision by Brett Stolarzyk at 157-pounds and #9 Gabe Fogarty posted a 10-2 major decision win at 165-pounds. Â
The Huskies closed the match with four consecutive matches that featured extra points for the Huskies.  At 174-pounds, #4 Clayton Jennissen improved to 21-5 on the season with a 19-3 tech fall and #5 Uthman Rabiu added another pin to his tally with a fall at 2:29 at 184-pounds.  #3 ranked Vince Dietz chipped in another six points with his fall victory at 4:49 at 197-pounds.  In the final tilt of the night, SCSU's #1 ranked Austin Goergen coasted to a 16-0 tech fall win at 285-pounds.  On the season, Goergen owns an 18-0 record.
The Huskies will continue their 2016-17 season with a trip to the North Country Open on Sunday, Jan. 29 at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn. Â The all-day open meet is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Â SCSU's next home bout will take place on Feb. 3 with a 7:00 p.m. dual against NSIC rival Minot State University.
Tickets for the Minot match are available at the gate, and all SCSU students get into the match free.
