Softball Takes Both Sunday Games At the Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Cloud State softball team (16-4) kept rolling to pair of wins on Sunday, March 12, on the fifth day of the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. at the National Training Center. The team blanked Philadelphia University (1-4) by a 15-0 score in the first game and picked up an 11-4 victory over Fairmont State (4-8) in the night game.
Sophomore Jaiden Lund had a big pair of games in picked up four hits including a pair of home runs and a double plus six RBIs. Senior Rebecca Harps recorded four hits, five runs, a home run, a triple and four RBIs. Senior Alyssa Coletto tallied three RBIs on two hits. Fellow senior Jessica Goerger totaled three hits, three runs and four RBIs.
Senior Megan Hedstrom started both games in the circle and threw three innings total, but didn't pick up wins in either game since she didn't go deep enough in the contests with big early leads in both. Freshman Jenna Trost (1-0) was the game one winner in throwing four scoreless innings with just two hits allowed. Sophomore Kate Kopeck (8-1) earned the second game win in throwing five relief innings with three runs allowed.
Game One
SCSU put up seven runs in the opening inning. Goerger had a two-run double. Lund drove in a pair of runs with a double. Bunnell plated a pair with her single.
The team put four more runs on the board in the second inning with Coletto, freshman Alexis Jacobs, Hedstrom and Bunnell all driving in a run.
The Huskies followed with another four-run inning in the third frame to finish off the scoring. Coletto had a two-run single and Jacobs tallied an RBI ground out.
Philadelphia's Katelyn Stys (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs in the start.
Game Two
The Huskies again used an early first inning to get momentum in crossing the plate six times. Goerger drove in a pair with her RBI single. Emmans drove in a run with her double and Lund plated three with a home run.
Fairmont State answered with a run in the bottom of the first with Addie Fullen scoring on an SCSU error.
SCSU put up a single run in the third inning on Lund's home run. The home run was her team leading fifth of the campaign.
St. Cloud State added a run to the advantage in the fourth on an RBI ground out from freshman Maya Keating.
The Fighting Falcons score two runs in the fourth inning on a home run from Samantha Hoban and an RBI double from Fullen.
The Huskies completed their scoring in the top of the seventh inning as Harps hit a three-run home run with Keating and Goerger on base.
Fairmont made the final score 11-4 with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from Beth Cook.
Rachel Bias (1-4) took the loss in allowing eight runs (six earned) in four innings in the circle.
The Huskies wrap up play at the Spring Games on Monday, March 13, with a single game against Slippery Rock University at 7:30 p.m. at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
