Softball Falls to Nebraska-Kearney and Pittsburg State On First Day of Hy-Vee Classic

ST. JOSEPH, Missouri – The St. Cloud State softball team (16-6) fell in both games on the opening day of the Hy-Vee Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. on Friday, March 17. The program started the day by dropping an 8-3 decision to Nebraska-Kearney (2-21) at the Griffon Softball Stadium on the campus of Missouri Western State. The program also lost the afternoon contest by an 11-1 score to Pittsburg State (19-7)
Senior Megan Hedstrom (6-4) started the first game against Nebraska –Kearney and suffered the loss after allowing four runs in four innings.
Sophomore Kate Kopeck (8-2) was tagged with the loss in the second contest against Pittsburg State in allowing seven runs on 10 hits in four innings worked.
Freshman Jenna Trost came in relief in both contests and allowed eight runs in four innings with four strikeouts.
Sophomore Morgan Emmans had two hits on the day. Senior Jessica Goerger walked twice and also drove in a pair of runs. Senior Abby Bunnell stole a pair of bases and also scored a run.
Game One
SCSU scored first with a run in the opening inning. Bunnell walked, stole second and then third before coming around on an RBI ground out from Goerger.
The Lopers took the lead for good in the third inning with three runs. Molly Stern and Sara Sempek both drove in a single tally in the frame.
UNK put a five-spot on the board in the fifth to put the game away. The big blow of the inning with a grand slam from Hallie Gydesen.
SCSU finished the scoring up with two in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Jaiden Lund walked and then stole second. Trost followed with her first career hit to move Lund to third. Freshman Alexis Jacobs plated Lund with her pinch hit base hit. Goerger drove in the final Huskies' run with her bases loaded walk.
Sara Sempek (1-4) earned her first win of the season in allowing three runs in seven innings in the circle.
Game Two
Pittsburg State scored first in the game with three runs in the second and two more tallies in the third. Jenna Bolton had a two-run double in the second, while Kristen Van Hoosen plated a pair with her two-run home run in the third.
The Huskies scored their run in the fourth inning with Emmans recording a single and racing around the bases to score on senior Alyssa Coletto's double.
The Gorillas finished the scoring up with six runs in the fifth inning. Myka Hayward, Lawren McKinney, Van Hoosen, Tiara Ewy and Kaity Kukowski all had RBI hits in the frame.
Bree Cornett (5-2) started and earned the win after going 3.1 innings with four hits allowed and one run plus four strikeouts.
The Huskies continue play in the Hy-Vee Classic with contests against Northeastern State at 10 a.m. and then host institution No. 18 Missouri Western State at 2 p.m. at the Griffon Softball Stadium.
