
Softball Falls to Northeastern State and No. 18 Missouri Western On Second Day of Hy-Vee Classic

ST. JOSEPH, Missouri – The St. Cloud State softball team (16-8) fell in both games on the second day of the Hy-Vee Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. on Saturday, March 18. The program started the day by dropping a 9-0 decision to Northeastern State (13-13) at Heritage Park - Field Three. The program also lost the afternoon contest by an 14-4 score to No. 18 Missouri Western (21-5) at the Griffon Softball Stadium
Senior Megan Hedstrom (6-5) was tagged with the loss against Northeastern State after allowing six runs on three hits, three walks and a hit by batter in her 1.2 innings thrown. Freshman Jenna Trost allowed three runs on seven hits in her 2.1 innings pitched in relief.
Sophomore Kate Kopeck (8-3) allowed all 14 runs (12 earned) in 5.1 innings worked to the Griffons in the team's second game of the day for her third loss of the season.
Sophomore Jaiden Lund wasn't retired the entire day at the plate to lead the offense. Lund went 3-for-3 with a run scored, a double, an RBI plus two walks. Freshman Anna Roth had pinch hit RBI single. Freshman Maya Keating picked up three hits. Senior Alyssa Coletto also had three hits plus two doubles. Senior Rebecca Harps had a pair of hits and an RBI. Sophomore Morgan Emmans totaled a hit and an RBI.
Game One
SCSU threatened in the first inning with senior Abby Bunnell and Keating reaching on back-to-back hits to start the game. The next three were retired in order though to keep the game scoreless.
Northeastern State put up six runs in the second inning on only three hits. The team was aided by three walks and a hit by pitch. Jessica Boone had a two-run single and Sierra Crick picked up a two-run single to key the offensive showing in the frame.
NSU finished off the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Crick driving in a run with her ground out and Paige Gann hitting a two-run home run.
Northeastern's Jennifer Wolf (4-4) threw a seven-hit shutout with four strikeouts in her five innings worked.
Game Two
The Huskies, for the second straight game, had two players reach in the opening inning with Keating picking up a hit and Coletto reaching base on a two-out knock, only to see the potential scoring inning thwarted.
Missouri Western put a six-spot on the board in the second inning. Kailey Green, Riley Wilson, Morgan Rathman and Shelbie Atwell all had RBIs with Katie Klosterman knocking in a pair of runs.
The Huskies answered with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Harps singled and moved to third on a double from Lund. Emmans followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Harps. Roth then recorded a two-out pinch hit single to left field to score Lund.
The Griffons scored three more runs in the bottom of the frame on Atwell's three-run home run.
The Huskies inched to within 9-4 with two more runs in the fifth. Coletto reached on a two-out double. Senior Brianne Hightshoe pinch ran for Coletto and scored on a Harps single. Harps then raced around the bases and scored on a single from Lund.
MWSU finished off the scoring and game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game ender was a three-run home run from Shelby Uhl.
Kenzie Hilzer (9-2) earned the win in going six innings with four runs allowed on 11 hits.
The Huskies wrap up play in the Hy-Vee Classic with contests against Washburn at 11 a.m. at Heritage Field Four and then Northwest Missouri State at 3 p.m. at the Griffon Softball Stadium on Sunday, March 19.
