Softball Falls Twice On Final Day of The Hy-Vee Classic to Washburn and Northwest Missouri State

ST. JOSEPH, Missouri – The St. Cloud State softball team (16-10) fell in both games on the third and final day of the Hy-Vee Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. on Sunday, March 19. The program started the day by losing a 7-3 contest to Washburn University (13-21) at Heritage Park - Field Four. The program also lost the afternoon contest in extra innings by an 8-7 score to Northwest Missouri State (12-9) at the Griffon Softball Stadium
Sophomore Kate Kopeck (8-4) started and allowed all seven runs in throwing her fifth complete game of the season against Washburn. She allowed five of the seven runs in the last two innings of work when the Ichabods came from behind for the victory. Kopeck struck out a career-high eight batters in the game, while surrendering seven hits and four walks.
Senior Rebecca Harps was the second game starter for SCSU against Northwest Missouri State and surrendered six runs (five earned) on 14 hits. Freshman Jenna Trost (1-1) entered in the game in the eighth inning and allowed two runs (one earned) in suffering the loss.
Sophomore Morgan Emmans picked up four hits including a double, a triple and an RBI between the two games. Senior Jessica Goerger totaled three hits, two runs, a home run and an RBI. Freshman Maya Keating had three hits and runs scored. Senior Alyssa Coletto picked up four RBIs on her two hits. Sophomore Jaiden Lund had three RBIs and two hits.
Game One
Washburn scored first with two runs in the third inning on Jordan Erickson's two-run home run.
The Huskies tied the game at two all with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Keating reached a one-out single, moved to second on a single from Lund and then third on a walk to Goerger. Coletto plated both Keating and Lund with her single to left field.
SCSU took the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on Goerger's second home run of the season.
WU answered and wrestled the lead back in the top of the sixth with three runs. Savannah Moore and Lacie Myers had RBIs in the frame.
Washburn finished off the scoring in the game and added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with Moore and Taylor Kemp knocking in a run each.
The win was earned by Kelsee Henry (6-10), who allowed three runs in seven innings in the circle.
Game Two
The Huskies took the early lead in the first inning with a run in the bottom of the frame. Senior Abby Bunnell began the game with a bunt single. She moved to second on a fielder's choice and scored on a single up the middle from Lund.
The Bearcats answered with two runs in the top of the second inning with Karli Allen and Kiana Baderdeen both driving in runs.
Northwest Missouri State added to the lead in the third inning with Kaitlin Weis driving in the run with her double.
SCSU took the lead back with four runs in the bottom of the third. Keating reached on an error and moved to second on a Goerger single. After a ground out, Coletto singled in both runners with a base hit up the middle to knot the game up at three all. Sophomore Morgan Emmans followed with a triple to score Coletto and then scored herself on a single from freshman Anna Roth.
The Bearcats answered with a run in the fourth inning with Karli Allen doubling in a tally to cut the SCSU lead to 5-4.
In what was shaping up as a back-and-forth contest, St. Cloud State added a run to the lead in bottom of the frame. Keating reached on a single, moved to second on a base hit and then third on a fielder's choice before scoring on a Lund single to right center.
The Bearcats tied the game up at six all in the top of the seventh with Allen and Tori Blythe driving in runs.
After SCSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh, NWMS took the lead for good on a two-run home run from Weis in the eighth inning.
The Huskies got to within a run, 8-7, of tying the game as a Lund's fielder's choice drove in Bunnell before a ground out ended the game.
Weis (1-1) picked up the relief win with 5.2 innings thrown in allowing three runs (one earned) with three strikeouts.
The Huskies will now have a week and half off before beginning NSIC play on the road against Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday, March 28, with a doubleheader starting at noon
