
Softball Splits Games Against Findlay and Saint Joseph’s On Second Day of Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Cloud State softball team (11-3) split the team's games on the second day of the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. at the National Training Center on Wednesday, March 8. The Huskies fell in first game by a 5-4 score to the University of Findlay (5-8) and then won a 4-3 contest over Saint Joseph's College (Ind.) (2-8) in the second game.
Megan Hedstrom (5-3) started the first game in the circle and took the loss for SCSU in allowing five runs (three earned) in a complete game. She came back in the second game and pitched out of jam in the sixth inning and all of the seventh inning for her third save of the season.
Sophomore Kate Kopeck (5-0) earned her fifth win of the campaign in the second game with 5.1 innings thrown for the Huskies.
Sophomores Morgan Emmans and Jaiden Lund plus senior Alyssa Coletto all accumulated three hits in the two games. Lund also had a home run and three RBIs. Freshman Maya Keating walked three times.
Game One
The Findlay Oilers got off to a fast start with two runs in the opening frame. Madison Arnold doubled in a run and Kelly Cejer followed with an RBI single.
The Huskies cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning on an Emmans' RBI single to drive in Harps, who began the frame by getting hit by a pitch.
Findlay put up a three-spot in the fourth inning with Madison Apple and Meredith Shepherd each getting RBI hits.
SCSU rallied late with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Coletto singled and was replaced by pinch runner Samantha Boettcher. Lund moved her to third with a one-out single. Senior Jordan Novak followed with an RBI double. Lund scored the second run of the frame on a pass ball. Senior Abby Bunnell then tallied a two-out RBI single before Findlay escaped without further damage to make the final margin 5-4.
Jenna Inman (2-0) earned the win with a complete game in which she allowed nine hits, a walk and four runs (two earned).
Game Two
The Huskies scored three runs in the first three innings including a two-run home run from Lund in the second frame to take a 3-0 lead over Saint Joseph's College.
The team added an insurance tally in the fourth frame on a Lund RBI single.
Saint Joseph's College cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the frame.
The Pumas threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but SCSU reliever Megan Hedstrom was able to protect the two-run cushion and only allowed one run on an Ashley Whitaker double before escaping a bases loaded situation with a two-out ground out.
Amanda Melzoni (2-4) allowed all four runs for SJC in throwing a complete game.
The Huskies continue play at the Spring Games on Thursday, March 9, with games against the Felician University at 7 a.m. and Assumption College at 12 p.m.
