CLERMONT, Fla. – The St. Cloud State softball team (13-3) won both of its games at the Spring Games in the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. on Thursday, March 9. The Huskies took the first game by a 12-0 score over Felician University (8-6) and then won a 4-1 contest over Assumption College (4-3) in the second game.
Sophomore Kate Kopeck (7-0) earned wins in both games and threw a total of nine innings on the day. Kopeck tossed a one-hit shutout in the first game of the day against Felician and came in relief in the second game against Assumption with two scoreless frames.
Senior Alyssa Coletto had four hits in the two contests including a home run plus three RBIs. Senior Rebecca Harps picked up three hits plus a home run and two RBIs. Sophomore Jaiden Lund and senior Abby Bunnell also had three hit days. The day saw nine different players pick up hits with eight coming up with at least one RBI.
Game One
The team pounded out 16 hits in the game and scored a season-high 12 runs in the 12-0 victory over Felician University. It was the first time the program has reached double figures in runs on the campaign and the first time since scoring 10 against Augustana last April. The shutout for the program was the third of the season and the second thrown by Kopeck.
Four different players recorded multi-hit performances in the contest led by three hits from Bunnell, Coletto and Lund.
The team put a five-spot on the board in the opening frame. Bunnell and freshman Maya Keating reached on back-to-back singles. Both moved up a base on stolen bases. On the theft of third by Bunnell, the ball was thrown into the outfield to allow her to score the first run of the game. Harps followed with a one-out two-run home run to drive in Keating. The home run was the first for Harps in 105 career games. After the second out was made, Coletto and Lund accomplished the rare feat of back-to-back home runs to increase the score to 5-0 after half an inning.
SCSU added a single tally in the second inning as Bunnell scored on a pass ball.
The team put up another run in the third inning as Coletto knocked in Emmans, who had started the frame with a double, with her RBI single.
The score remained 7-0 until the seventh inning when SCSU tallied five runs. Redshirt freshman Cassie Francesconi reached on an error, moved to second on Coletto's single and third with Coletto taking second on Lund's single. Freshman Alexis Jacobs hit into a fielder's choice that eliminated Lund at second, but also drove in Francesconi. Sophomore Samantha Boettcher followed with a double to score Coletto. Bunnell then singled in Jacobs with her bunt single. A pass ball followed to allow Boettcher to score. Bunnell scored the final run of the inning and the game on another pass ball to make the final margin 12-0.
Kopeck allowed just one hit, a two-out single in the second inning by Jeanette Roldan, in throwing the complete game.
The loss was taken by the Golden Falcons Ashley Owens (5-3). Owens surrendered five runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Game Two
The Huskies again started the scoring early with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Bunnell walked and stole second to get immediately into scoring position. After a ground out moved Bunnell to third, senior Jessica Goerger drove her in with a sacrifice fly. Harps then picked up a two-out single and moved to third on an Emmans single. Coletto followed with a single to drive in Harps with the team's second run of the frame.
The Greyhounds cut the deficit in half in the top of the second inning on Cassie Schultz's RBI double.
The Huskies picked up a single tally in both the fifth and the sixth innings. The run in the fifth came in to score as Keating scampered in on a pass ball after beginning the frame with leadoff walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a fly out.
The insurance run in the sixth inning was driven in by Goerger when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Senior Megan Hedstrom came in relief to pitch the last three innings to pick up her fourth save of the season.
Assumption's Courtney Oliver (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
The Huskies continue play at the Spring Games on Saturday, March 11, with games against Northwood University at 7 a.m. and California University of Pennsylvania at 9:30 a.m.
