ST. CLOUD, MINN. – In the sport of soccer, it doesn't matter when a team scores a goal. Just that the team eventually does.

Well, the St. Cloud State University soccer team eventually did score. After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, a late goal by junior Nicole Friis (Appleton, Wis. / Appleton North) evened things up at 1-1, lifting St. Cloud State to a 1-1 draw with Wayne State College.

The Huskies controlled play for the majority of the game, as they won the possession, shots and corner kicks battles in the stat book. The Wildcats, though, scored the first goal of the game despite those stats, as Megan Phillips scored at 34:40 to give Wayne State a 1-0 lead.

St. Cloud State put pressure on the Wildcats defense, threatening to score multiple times in the final 10 minutes of the first half. The Huskies were unable to score the equalizer and entered halftime in a one goal deficit.

After 35 minutes of hard-fought play, St. Cloud State finally evened the score on Friis' header. Mia Griogii (Eagan, Minn. / Eastview) drew a foul at midfield, giving the Huskies a free kick around the 80-minute mark. The senior then executed a beautiful cross to Friis, who headed it into the upper right corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team was able to score in the final 10 minutes of regulation, nor in the following extra 20 minutes, resulting in the 1-1 draw.

St. Cloud State tallied 14 shots as a team with six shots on goal Friday evening, while Wayne State managed just six shots against the Huskies defense. For St. Cloud State, sophomore forward Claire Shea (Excelsior, Minn. / Chanhassen) led the way with five shots, two of which were on goal, while Hannah Marion (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / South St. Paul) added three.

With the tie, the Huskies overall record now stands at 3-2-3 and they are 2-1-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. St. Cloud State will return to action on Sunday, October 6 when it hosts Augustana University at 1 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
