Softball unleashes for 36 runs in Viterbo sweep

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University softball team was always going to have one of the most explosive offenses in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) in 2019.
On Saturday, the Huskies showed just how explosive their offense can be.
St. Cloud State scored a combined 36 runs in just 10 innings against Viterbo University Saturday afternoon, earning two wins over the V-Hawks in dominating fashion. Though it wasn't two shut outs, the Huskies blanked Viterbo 15-0 in game one before St. Cloud State took the second game by a final score of 21-2.
The Huskies put eight on the scoreboard in the first inning of game one, showing off their powerful line up and high IQ on the bases. Raven Vanden Langenberg (Seymour, Wis. / Seymour) wasted no time putting the first run on the board for St. Cloud State, as she opened the game by getting hit by a pitch, stole second, stole third and then proceeded to easily score the first run of the game on some miscommunication by the V-Hawks shortstop and catcher.
From there, it was all Huskies all the time, as Maya Keating (Wheaton, Ill. / Warrensville-Wheaton), Morgan Emmans (Blaine, Minn. / Mounds Academy), Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South), Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield), Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario / Emily Carr Secondary), Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) and Vanden Langenberg (again) all scored before Viterbo managed to get out of the inning. The damage, though, was definitely done. After taking an 8-0 lead in the first, St. Cloud State added three more runs in the second to go up 11-0 before a four run fourth inning gave them a 15-0 lead heading in to the fifth and ultimately final inning.
Bradi Yost (Parkersburg, Iowa / Aplington-Parkersburg), Kylie Thomsen (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove) and Lauren Kirchberg (Columbus, Wis. / Columbus) pitched a near flawless game, as the three pitchers gave up just one hit combined in five innings of work. Yost earned her first win of the season, as she gave up one hit while striking out two in two innings of work. Kirchberg made her collegiate debut Saturday morning, tallying two strikeouts while not giving up a hit in her first outing as a Husky.
St. Cloud State picked up right where it left off in game two, as the team wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead over the V-Hawks in the first inning. Bowlin provided the highlight, as the lefty slapper hit an inside the park grand slam to put the Huskies up 10-0 with only one out in the inning. St. Cloud State would add three more runs before Viterbo finally recoded three outs for the substantial 13-0 first inning lead.
The V-Hawks did manage to score two runs in the top of the third, but it wasn't enough to crack through the Huskies already extensive lead. In fact, after Viterbo scored its two runs, St. Cloud State went ahead and scored four of their own in the bottom of the inning, extending the lead to 17-2 with two innings left to play.
A four-run fourth inning resulted in the final 21-2 score, as Emma Murphy (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) closed out the game on the mound for the Huskies. The sophomore, along with starter Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bay Port) held the V-Hawks to just two runs on four hits in five innings of work, while LaPoint earned her third win of the 2019 season.
Haley McFarlane (Swisher, Iowa / Cedar Rapids Prairie) was on fire offensively for St. Cloud State, as she went 6-7 with three runs and six RBI in the two games against Viterbo. In game one, McFarlane was a double shy of hitting for the cycle as she hit a single, triple and home run in the game while tallying four RBI.
With the wins, the Huskies overall record improves to 7-1 on the season. St. Cloud State will hit the road for Florida for its spring break trip, where the team will play in 12 games over the course of six days. The first game will be at 1:45 EST on Tuesday, March 5 when the Huskies take on Felician College.
